Monday May 1 1905
Gale from North West, rain, snow and hail all day.
Finished painting East side of home.
Charlie Senna came and Traded of one of my old fishlines for a reel.
Henry Thayer called a little while with thick coat and mittens on.
Tuesday May 2
Warm and pleasant. Charlie Senna here. Painted three quarters of South end of the house. Arose at sunrise and worked until after sunset. Over to Henry’s this evening. Charlie went fishing at 11 AM and hasn’t been around yet unless he came and went while I was at Henry’s.
Wednesday May 3
Raining PM and evening.
Finished paint North end of house and commenced on West side, but rain stopped me.
Went to station by boat from Peter Coles. Left at 1 PM and returned at 5 PM. Henry Cole helped me to land, and came up and took supper with me.
Uncle Reube and Henry inspected my work this morning.
I hear that Charlie Senna took Frank Gilmore’s boat without leave and went up the river with it on his way to Williston. I think Frank aught to sweeten him a little.
Thursday May 4
Beautiful day. Rain last night. Charlie Senna came in at 10 PM quite wet. He helped me rake my garden and orchard and left here about 2 PM for Winooski as he said but was seen down street about 7 PM. I am afraid Charlie is going to the bad and that I shall be obliged to refuse him to the privilege of coming to see me. I heard late of bad things about him down street this evening.
A P. card from Randolph says Cap’n is doing as well as could be expected. Sits up a little, but cannot walk around; rests very poorly, and of course does not gain strength very fast. Mrs. Button measles, but is getting over them.
My back itching tonight as it used to when I was poisoned a year ago. Hope I am not to have another such a time as I did then. Wind has been Northerly two or three days, but shifted to South this evening feels and sounds like rain.
Fri. May 5
Rainy haven’t done much.
Sat, May 6th At Station in mng.
Went to the station early morning. Rowed over from P. Coles. Chet came ashore 9:30 A.M. and with his folks assistance planted gardens on new farm. A fine day.
Sun. May 7 At Station,
Hard West Gale all day, Finished writing Lilac cream literature for B.S.P.
Mon. May 8 Came for Station at noon
Chet came to station at 9:30 a.m. with two red squirrels in cages, gave me $6.00. I left station at 11 a.m. took dinner at Coles. Henry + Clara have measles. Ethel has very swore hand.
Spoke to Raytee about new plow for Chet to replace one that Joe broke. Went over to the farm and got Chet’s box of crackers he left on piazza. Called a few minutes at Farmer’s. Frank Gilman was plowing potatoes and beans for Chet.
Went over to Henry’s for milk this evening. Burt called also. I think I am poisoned by ivy or something else, on my back and shoulders. Card from Miss Button says Captain seems to be slowly improving. They had two meals of trout, wish I could be there to catch and eat some. I wish so too.
Vibro Disc treatment for one month came to-day.
Thurs, May 9
A fine day but for a west or North West gale which had been blowing all day. Looked some like rain A.M. so I dug witch grass and raked rubbish off garden. Back itched from poison last night that I rested very little and so I felt chilly all day. Quite cool this evening, at 4 p.m. took pail for milk to Henry’s, and went over to see Burt Hines and have just got home at 9:20 p.m. Had a good supper and a good time. Pete Hardy and Charlie Spaulding came in for an evening call. Burt played violin and banjo and I sung. Burt is coming over to take supper with me some evening when I let him know.
Wed. May. 10
Went down to Raytee’s to send for ammonia for poison on my back. He was fishing. Came home and finished painting west side of house: this finished the first coat. Went down have Henry Cole help me tomorrow so I can get my boat into commission. Early next week if possible.
Went over to Henry’s and got milk. Aunt Em and Clara gave me a nice piece of apple pie and a couple of doughnuts, they are always giving me something. Uncle Ruebe came back with to me and visited an. hour and a half while I painted.
Turs. May 12 At station, came ashore at 630 PM
Chet came at 6 A.M. Said he had another fine boy up home born last night.
I came ashore and Uncle Ruebe and I went to the city Took Charlie Senna’s overcoat to 72 Pearl St and found it to be a Barber Shop. Brought the coat home. Got fixings for my boat, etc.
Sat. May 13 Went to the station at 5.15 P.m.
Left Cole’s at 4 P.M. Watkins at Benlaw burning brush, etc. Nettle had been at the station P.M. Chet came ashore at 5:30 P.M.
Sun. May 14 At station
Nearly a Gale most of the day but much easier at night.
Daisy and inspector McKenzie called on me at 1 P.M.
Washed and mended some of my clothes.
Chet came at Midnight.
Mon. May 15
Rain last night and morning. Left station 3:45 Went to West Point got doz. bottles and bread at Stone’s Cottage and came home in season to catch Howard the mail carrier.
Mailed Lilac cream to BSP and card Charlie for Ex address and two letters for Chet.
Dinner at Coles. Patsy wheel harrowed gardens. Henry helped caulk boat. Went to Henry’s for milk. Returned P. Coles bag, borrowed two bring bottles, visited awhile and came home. Mrs Cole gave me bull head for breakfast.
Tue. May. 16
Storm conditions prevailed all day, with very light showers a few times.
Worked on boat. Henry called in and helped me half an hour. He planted his corn patch near my barn.
Uncle Reube and I got a barrel of hen-manure at Tyrdal’s and brought home a keg of cider and 4 cans of plumes from Aunt Em’s.
Went down to Coles and measured on Station Boat, the distance from seat to hole in oar lock: just twelve inches.
Wrote to Stone, about bottles and bread.
Felling pretty tired to-night.
Wed. May. 17
8:20 P.M. Quite cool mng, but a very fine day after all.
Worked on Boat. Uncle Reube helped me put strip on bottom outside. Henry got another pair oar locks etc. for boat.
Went down to see the boys play Croquet this evening. Big thunder shower off west.
Thurs. May 18
8.30 P.M. Showery, and warm. Threatening to-night.
Went over this mng and worked on braces, eye and ring bolts for my boat. Henry came out at 8 o’clock and helped until noon, we then went in and ate dinner. Afterwards I finished all the irons I guess and came home and put some of them on. I hope to finish the boat to-morrow. Bert Hines got a ¼ in. rod for me for cleaning rod for rifle. Henry Cole came up and thought he saw a woodchuck, so we took rifle and went down to lake-shore only to find that the game was a little red pine bush about a foot high.
Porter called to see if I knew anything about C. S. breaking into Lincoln Merriheu’s Camp.
A post office card from Mrs. Button says Cap’n is improving, but doc won’t let him out until sun comes out bright and warm. Cass has measles: he is the 4th in the family in 4 weeks. Genie and Francie are at school.
Fri. May. 19
8.45 P.M. A cold day Cloudy, A.M. Sun P.M. and a Fresh breeze and N.W. Gale all day. Wind easier to-night and sky clearing: may be frost before mng.
Finished the Boat all but painting. Carried tools home I borrowed of Henry; took supper, got milk , visited and am now just home. Bert and Clara out riding. Bert expects Frank to-morrow noon. Letter from Charlie enclosing one from Mary relating to the old place. Ed seems bound to act mean, and he knows how all right.
Sat. May. 20
North Wester all day and very cold. Finished the boat unless I paint he bottom once more. Started for Station at 4:20 P.M. as wind seemed to be going down, but it didn’t, so stopped at Cole’s to the surprise party which came at 8 o’clock to celebrate Mrs. Cole’s birthday. Dancing, singing and games and general good times, Cake and Coffee. Came home at 1 o’clock in the mng and went to bed.
Sun. May 21 At Station
Started for Station at 4 AM and reached it at 6 AM. And Chet came ashore.
Nothing of interest at Station.
Mon. May 22 At Station until 4 P.M.
Pleasant but windy. Fresh South A.M. and Fresh North P.M.
Chet rowed the Alice R from Colchester this P.M. all the way against a good N.W. breeze and reached Station at 3:20 P.M. I left at 4, and landed at 6:00. Called at Henry’s this Eve, he was at Frank’s.
Uncle Reube will go down with me to take the Pike to Charlie some P.M. this week. I wish I could be young once more and as good as I used to be.
Tue. May 23
Cold wind from N. all day, but warm in sun where wind didn’t blow.
Got paint at Henry’s and painted boat 2nd coat, outside and bottom inside. Uncle Reube helped take boat out of barn. Dug potato hills some in P.M.
Letter from P.S.P. wants corrections made. I wish the devil had it.
At Cole’s in evening, Tried to do an example for H. but failed until after I came home and went to bed, and nearly to sleep. Then I lighted lamp and did it in three minutes.
Wed May 24. Frost this Mng.
Fine day, but ground white with frost this mng.
Henry C. came up to see his example done this mng, and took breakfast with me. Washed dishes and straitened out panty and dug potato hills. Haven’t felt a bit well for a week, and don’t to-night. Uncle Reube will go to city with me to-morrow P.M. and Farmers will get pike for me to send to Charlie. Took supper at Cole’s.
Made box to ship pike in.
11. P.M. Have just finished corrections on P.L.C. and written good long letter to B.S.P.
Starlight and light South wind, Think we will have good day to-morrow.
May 25
A very warm day, fresh S. wind and smoky. Storm conditions prevailing its looking like rain very soon. Partly dug a spring, hoed out for potatoes and poisoned some for planting; mixed some fertilizer; took a bath; went down to Farmers and got 13 ½ pounds of fresh pike; got 5 lbs. more at Raytee’s and with luck Reube took them to the P.O + shipped to Charlie. Wrote him to look out for them. Home about 5 P.M. Supper at Henry’s. Back paining me very badly between shoulders. Have felt pretty bad for nearly two weeks. Hope I wont be sick.
May 26
Cloudy + warm A.M. Rainy P.M. Planted potatoes, the first planting I have done. Put faucet in keg of cider. Examined the tub of salted cucumbers; found them in good condition. Gave 2 qts. to Mrs. Cole. Henry Thayer came over, sowing poisoned corn for crows.
Henry Cole is here to stay with me to night.
May 27
Fine day. Light northerly wind. Worked in garden A.M. Went to station about noon. Howard was late. Henry was laying foundation for monument in cemetery + Chet came ashore about 2 P.M. Nothing of interest at station.
May 28 At station
A calm beautiful day. A party at Stone’s camp, W. Pt. and another with a boathouse in tow made things messy for an hour or two near noon. Washed + mended some clothes.
May 29 Came ashore
After taking light down, went back to bed. Chet came about 6 A.M + awoke one. He said he found the dead body of a doe washed ashore on the beach when he went home Sat P.M. It was still there when he came back in the morning. He could not find the game warden to report it to and so he notified Mr. Thomas, Game Commissioner.
Peter Cole has the measles, Alma Bean’s baby may go blind on account of not having been washed clean when born.
Quite hot about noon. Went over to Henry’s and got milk to cook for tomorrow if it rains. Aunt Em gave me a piece of pie and a doughnut + Clara gave me an orange. Was over again for this eve for a yeast cake to make bread. Planted potatoes + dug witch grass. Got along first rate. Mixed my bread just now, and am going to bed.
10:10 P.M. Raining hard + has been for and hour.
May 30 Decoration Day
Fair, and a cool stiff N. Breeze all day. But calm tonight. Quite light and clear this evening though there is no moon. Baked four loaves of bread. Henry came in just before I took them from oven. He was much pleased with the appearance. I also made fine apple pie and a lot of my combination hash, washed up dishes, swept floor, and put everything in good order once more. At Coles eve, Henry just home from city where he went last night to be there today. Wrote Hagen Bro’s regarding purse which I missed and I might have left there. 9:30 P.M northern lights are commencing to show up. Look out for cold snap. I guess I must try to accomplish something tomorrow.
May 31
Fine day to work. Mod N + NW wind all day. Calm, clean evening. Not feeling well this morning. Got up at 6:20, rather late. Smoothed the seed bed and pulled lots of grass and weeds, and plowed beets, carrots, parsnips, onions and cabbage. Gave Clara some climbing cucumber seeds. Aunt gave me some S. squash, watermelon and muskmelon seeds. Henry came in this morning and I gave him a piece of pie to eat and a loaf of new bread to carry home. Got some milk and took supper there. Expect Uncle to dinner tomorrow. No news from Charlie of fish. Sent card of inquiry.
