9 PM A beautiful day. Sharp in morning. Thawing A.M. but cold N.E. wind P.M. Clear and calm evening.
Finished sawing wood. Finished mending old frock: two jobs completed. Returned Henrys ice chisel and Aunt Em’s pail. At home after 4 this evening.
Mailed letter to our Mutual friend + card to Chet to have him let me know Fri. or Sat. if Baby is better or worse.
Wrote letter to Genie Button this evening.
Letter from W. A. Weed Shelburne answering inquiry regarding Charles Senna, sent to Charlotte Feb 22. Charlie is with Mrs. A. H. Weed in Hinesburg.
Thurs. Mar. 2
A beautiful day. Thawing middle of day. Quite cool tonight and clear + S. wind light. Splitting wood. Nearly finished. Joe Bassett called to see wood pile. Expects to be driving hack in a week or two, + to be married next fall. He was eighteen years old at 4 A.M. today.
Peter and Henry called to see if I was sick. They have a new horse. Mailed letters to Jeanie Button, and Mrs. A.H. Weed including one to Charlie Senna.
At Peter Coles’ this evening reading news and afterward a story to all hands. “The Liberty Boys of ’76”.
Hope I may hear tomorrow that Baby is much better.
Fri. Mar 3
9 PM Comfortable, though thawing but very little if any.
Storm conditions prevailing all day. Dark and cloudy tonight. Finished sawing and splitting my wood pile and cleaned up farm floor. Carried home Henry’s one man cross-cut. Took supper at Henry’s. Burt Hines there.
Henry received sample color card of paints from the Hagar Bros. No mail: no callers. Hope to hear tomorrow that Baby is much better.
Washed out frock. Mended sleeve of another. Sponged bread this evening. Baking tomorrow.
Expect Burt over to see me tomorrow evening so I must put things in order all around.
Sat. Mar 4 Inauguration of Roosevelt
All kinds of weather. In morning a snowstorm almost blizzard and quite cold. P.M. sun and thawing little on S. side. Clean and cold evening but warmer than this morning.
No card from Chet so think Baby must be better. I hope so. At home all day + evening. No callers.
Baked three loaves bread and 4 pies. Swept up washed dishes and that is a about all. I must- must- must- get to work on “Lilac Cream” for it is promised for Apr. 1.
No card from Genie to let me know how or where his mother is. Nothing from Mrs. Weed on Charlie either. It beats the devil that I can never hear from anybody till a year or two afterward.
Sun. Mar. 5
9 PM Storm conditions prevailing all day. Snow came here about 6 P.M. Still snowing lightly. No wind, and seemingly much warmer than at sunset.
At home all day. No callers. Worked some on Lilac Cream. I wish it was finished. Wheeled in some wood to be prepared for storm. Heard Bells (church) in direction of Sandbar seemingly when going down to Cole’s this evening.
Shall look for Chet to-morrow. Hope he will be able to assure me that Baby is much better.
Shelled a dishpan full of beans P.M.
Head-ache since I came home.
Mon, Mar 6. New Moon, 0:19 A.M
9 PM Clear and thawing mng. Sudden cold and squall at 9 A.M and cold all through the day. Storm conditions prevailing. Tonight very clear and cold.
Mending old clothes.
Chet came about 2 P.M. took dinner. Brought Baby’s rocker from Station. Wrote letter for me to mail. Letter from Genie. Cass’ baby very sick but improving. Mrs. Button up every night for a week. Cap’n sawing wood halfway to Randolph.
At Henry’s, I learned that Bert went to Randolph Saturday and returned to-day. Frank went after him at city and missed him. Our Baby is much better and getting along well. Am very glad.
Tue Mar. 8
9:30 PM Storm conditions and fresh South wind all day. Dark and cloudy to-night and wind feels like rain.
Mending old clothes. Made mince and apple pies.
Lots of mail but nothing of importance except letter from B.S. R. No callers. At Cole’s this evening. War in East continues with chance favorable to Japs at this date.
Wed. Mar. 8
Warming, thawing and light fine snow falling all day. Mending old clothes yet. Shucked another panful of beans. At Henry’s this P.M. to read war news. Japs are giving Russians hell, and apparently have Kuropatkin nearly surrounded. No callers. Rather lonesome to-day, somehow.
Thu, March 9-1905
Saw Stone of City Warmest day yet, and very pleasant.
Went to City with Henry. Saw Stone about lumber for Cottage repairs at the Point.
At Cole’s this evening. Read the “Pedigree Question” to them. Got paint and paper for inside and outside. Must commence very soon on inside work.
Fri, Mar. 10.
9 PM Thawing considerable though day, but freezing at night. Cloudy, storm conditions prevailing though sun shining more in a while. Clear and starlight evening. No wind. Very fine. Still mending old clothes. Uncle Reube called A.M. and Henry this P.M after smoke bbl. Had very pleasant call from each.
At Henry’s this evening. Bert came in and told me of his visit to Randolph.
Japs nearly surrounding Russians.
Sat. Mar. 11
11 PM No thawing. Clouds and Sunshine. Clear and cool evening.
Made pies. 2 Black-berry, 2 mince, and 4 apple.
No mail: no callers.
At Cole’s-evening. Pete at Farmer’s. Mrs. Tatro over and heard war news. Japs have nearly surrounded Kuropatkin and are wiping lots of Russians off the earth.
Sun, Mar 12.
11 PM Cold and windy, and sun and clouds. Fine Evening.
At home all day. No callers. Nothing doing much.
Cleaned pantry for Kal and Painting etc.
Am not feeling at all well to-night. Am afraid I may have on of my colic spells before morning.
Mon, Mar, 13
11:20 PM Very cold. 4 degrees above 0 this morning. Sun and clouds. Clear tonight and still.
Chet came at 7:30, just as I had dressed and then went to Station. I had a regulation and finished just before Henry Thayer came in: He went down to see Raytee and Amos and I went about getting dinner for Chet when he should return.
Henry came back and visited quite a while. I gave him some pie and some bread 16 days old, to show him how good it would keep in a stone jar.
Chet came soon after Henry went home. He brought brass kettle and scales from Goodspeed’s, took swill over to Henry’s, ate some perch, read war news and came home.
Japs still whaling Russians and have them nearly surrounded. Uncle Reube called this P.M. Still mending old clothes. At Cole’s this evening.
My back is very lame and sore for several days past.
Wish I had had Chet put some plasters on for me. It pains me all the time. Much worse than usual.
Tue. Mar 14
9 PM A most beautiful warm and pleasant day.
Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Tatro, two old ladies, my neighbors, came and took dinner with me, and went home happy as two little children. Henry came for me to help him saw wood and as I did all the P.M. It hurt my back and made me awful lame but I stuck to it. I am going again if I live until morning.
I made two loaves bread and a plate of raised biscuit, as fine looking and tasting as the best of them ever made.
A beautiful evening. Northern Lights showing up but not very brightly.
Wed. Mar 15
Letters and Cards mailed. Letters to B.S.P. Charles Weed of Hinesburg, Cards to same Charles Weed, Shelburne. R.F.D. and also to Mrs. A. H. Weed Shelburne. R.F.D.
Beautiful day but not as warm as yesterday. Thawed some.
At Henrys at 6 A.M. Took breakfast and ran the saw all day, or until 4:30 when we quit. My back and arms, wrists and hands ache, feel tired and weak, but I guess they will feel better in the morning. I think we will finish sawing tomorrow A.M.
Poor old Mrs. Burns was buried today.
I hear that the old ladies enjoyed their dinner very much indeed with me yesterday, and I am very glad that I invited them, for it is a great pleasure sometimes to make other people happy.
Thur. Mar 16 1905
10 PM Another warm and beautiful day.
Finished sawing Henry’s woodpile at 10 A.M. P. Cole came for sawdust. After dinner I called on Harry Tyndal had a very pleasant visit. Saw incubator, hens, and all the things pertaining to Poultry raising. They lent me some Argosy’s to read. On my way home I stopped to see Burt.
At Cole’s this evening. All hands there. Fred Farmer had the floor and was telling what he had seen in slight of hand and Hypnotism.
I feel pretty tired and lame tonight, but not as bad I guess as I did last night.
Fri. Mar. 17.
9 PM A beautiful warm summer day only for the wind. Evening lovely, and the first one of the season not freezing. Haven’t done a thing. Shiftless. All day wasted.
At Coles this evening reading war news. Japs all around Tie Pass and are undoubtedly nearing the end which cannot be far distant for Kuropatkin.
Sat. Mar. 18
The finest yet. Thawing in good shape.
Dug old kalsomine from Bedroom ceiling, and an awful dirty job. Went to Henry’s for water, as that in my well is muddy and stagnant and full of wrigglers of some sort I never saw before.
At home all day and evening. No mail. No callers.
Sun. Mar 19
9 PM Wild Geese
Thawing all day but a cold wind.
Filled water barrel in kitchen for use in washing dishes, etc.
At home all day. No callers. Reading Argosies.
Mon. Mar 20. N. Wind.
10 PM Quite cold. Freezing all day. Slight snow last night. Was lucky getting water when I did.
Chet came and went to Station. Didn’t stop to dinner, though had it ready. He is hurrying work on the boats.
Wild geese made their appearance in field near Porters Red barn and a gull flew over here at 6 P.M. First one seen.
Cold north wind all day, tonight calm and full moon and can hear ice cracking all along shore. Probably caused by water commencing to rise from lots of rain and thaw.
Aunt Em gave me a lot of honey and half a pound of butter.
Henry came over, made mortar and plastered the square spot in kitchen, A dirty job.
Tues Mar. 21
8 PM North Wind. Showering a little, cloudy, still tonight and warm.
Plastered up holes and cracks in bedroom and ceilings pantry and walls made whitewash and put on coat in bedroom and pantry.
Uncle Reube called an hour P.M.
At Henrys’ the evening. Took supper.

9 PM Fine day. Thawing a little.
Whitewashed bedroom. puttied nail holes and painted it.
Went over to Henry’s for oil. Henry and separator gone to City.
P. Cole and Fred Farmer called for a minute for a minute at 11.A.M.
Wild Geese 15 or 20 going north at 5:30 P.M.
At Coles this evening. No war news, Japs and Russians both racing for Harbin.
A Beautiful evening. Calm. Moon a little past full. Clear and not very cold. Though of course freezing a little.
Thurs. Mars 23
9:30 PM Wind So. Thawing all day. Very little sun.
Painting in pantry and clearing and cleaning out. Puttying up holes etc. Slow work.
At Henrys after sour milk. Aunt Em gave me half dozen eggs.
P. Cole stopped to show his new Ex. Wagon.
Air feels damp and chilly tonight.
For nearly a week the air has been in such condition as to carry sounds a long distance.
I never knew such conditions to exist for as long a time before. Sun went down looking as red as blood.
Fri. Mar. 24 1905
So. Wind very fresh, Warm and pleasant but strong S. wind.
Baked four loaves of bread and 7 pies; washed dishes and straightened out things once more. Uncle Reube called an hour and Jim Sumner came in for a few minutes.
At home all day and evening; pretty tired.
Sat Mar. 25
9 PM S. Wind, Light, Foggy morning and evening. Midday cloudy. Hardly any wind.
Sick all night and A.M. Went over for Uncle Reube to help clean out stove and pipe. We had hell of a time at it. Pipe all rotten; he went after pipe at Henry’s and got more. I went to P. Coles and got a knee and made out to patch the pipes as it will go till and get some new next week.
At Coles this Ev. Japes floated a loan of $160.000.000 half N.Y. and in half London.
Sun Mar. 26
9 P.M. So Wind light, Foggy all A.M. Fait and cloudy P.M.although a nice day.
Puttied nail and shot holes in kitchen and read a little.
No callers. At Henrys. After 2 pails water this evening. Clara gave me a cup of coffee and couple of donuts. Henry told me a lot about bees that I never new before.
Must try and do enough to make a show if possible tomorrow.
Mon. Mar. 27
9 PM Wind N and W, Quite Warm, Foggy Morning and evening, With rain at both ends of day.
Mixed kalsomine. Plastered holes and painted in pantry and bedroom.
Chet came and I went to Point with him. Moved signal box. Rode over to Henry’s and got papering board. Mrs. Farmer called and saild that Mrs. Cole and Peter’s wife are on a tantrum again.
Was down there this evening and read war news, but old lady did not come in.
Chet has to pay for all materials to repair boats and he is thinking he has had about enough of it and that he will look up a little farm. I agree with him.
My Blackbirds came back today.
I hear that Mr.Button has cut his hand very badly on a saw.
Tu. Mar. 28-
Warm, Sun and clouds. Hardly any wind.
Kalsimined kitchen first coat, paint and putty.
Uncle Reube brought somethings, to House and Barn. Couldn’t find brushes and shears. Went to Coles for him but were not there. Think they are at Will Parkers.
At Henry’s this evening. Pretty tired to-night.
Wed. Mar.29.
9:30 PM Wind W., Nice warm day. Painting kitchen, Swept and cleaned out once more. Kal kitchen 2d coat, Much improved.
Sid called a few minutes toward evening. Sent by Howard for shears and brushes at Will Parkers hope he will get them.
Mailed letters to B.S.P. and Geo. Parker.
Thu. Mar. 30
Wind S. Fine warm day. Wind light S. until 4 PM shifted to west, or north. Rained at 5 PM and thunder shower a little later.
Wrote a line to Chet. My brushes and shears are at Carey’s. Finished all inside painted except windows (sash drawing). Now nearly to paper at any time.
Uncle Reube called at 3 .P.m. and put his things on scaffold. This evening quite rainy and I have worked on B.S.P’s Lilac cream. Getting along fairly well think.
I wish it was all done and sent away.
Fri Mar 31. .
10 PM Wind N-N.W Colder, Squally, Grand display of N.Light all the evening. Cloudy.
Finished two windows and kal cellar way and chamber stairway etc.
At Henry’s PM. Clare gave me Buttermilk and sweet milk. This evening pared and prepared a panful of apples for pies: Picked over and put soaking a pint and a half of beans and pared a lot of potatoes for to-morrow.
No callers. Sample copy of R. N.Yorker for mail. Am feeling pretty tired and back aches pretty hard.
