Sat. July 1, 1905
Went to station, got there at 6.30 P.M.
Chet said the Mariquita ran on the little reef last night and that was her whistling for assistance, that I heard. Burlington Ball Team and friends, 24 in all, on board.
They had only had small boat to carry 3 or 4, and so they came for Chet then took a boat and went to the rescue. He took 21 of them in three trips and landed them all safely at W. Pt. Worked harder then in he did in his whole life from 10:00 to 1:30 and got $5.00 for it and a promise of a hundred or more besides, but I guess he has got as much as he ever will, out of that gang.
Sun July 2. At Station. Hot 90° in house
Mon July 3. At Station
Rain, Rain - Rain, Cloud-burst at St. Albans and lots of damage elsewhere.
Tue July 4. Came ashore.
Left station at 8.A.M. rowed to W. Pt to Stone’s cottage. Called on Porter’s people at Tucker’s Cottage and came home. An awful current running through the Pass. Water 8 to 10 inches higher this side than the other and it was all I could do to pull trough. Thought twice I would have to give it up. Never saw it so bad.
Shall be looking for Mrs. Button and Genie in about two weeks from now.
Picked 8 qts strawberries P.M. took them to Gilmore’s but he’s not going to city tomorrow, so took them to Raytee’s.
Took supper Raytee’s and Mrs. R had the biggest and nicest Strawberry cake I ever tackled, there was a milk-pan full and she gave me a quarter of it and I ate it. Henry Cole and I saluted Henry Thayer’s folks after they went to bed and Henry stayed with me to-night
Very Hot Day
Wed July 5-1905
Another awful hot day, pulled weeds in garden.
Returned 26 berry basket to H.C.T. Gave them bottle of C. Wine.
Shot a crow with rifle. Frank Hines came for two qts. berries so picked them for him but skinned the bed to do it, got 25¢.
Blackberry shortcake for supper. H. Cole at supper and with me tonight. He is asleep but, so hot – I can’t sleep and as I wish.
9:50 P.M. grand display of Aurora Borealis.
Think it will be cooler soon.
Thu, July 6.
4 A.M. found me in garden digging weeds, cleared a good space.
H.C.T came and borrowed watering pot; told me how to fix my onions and I followed his advice and hoed out beets, potatoes and discovered that a woodchuck is hiding around my barn.
Went to Chet’s after Raytee’s pipe tongs, Folks gave me some dinner. Little Chetsie looks sick to me and I can’t help feeling very anxious about him. He was allowed to play in water and so took a bad cold. I am afraid they will loose him if he don’t get an appetite and more strength than he seems to have now.
Made out an order for Grandma Gates to have her pension mail sent to D. Burgoirs box, so no one will have to go to Winooski for it every time.
Over to Henry’s this evening, gave Clara some red cabbage plants and Henry gave me some very fine white ones.
Fri, July 7.
Hot as hell as usual, Picked strawberries, 34 qts, but only 2 qts very good. Took them to Aunt Em. Took dinner there: peas and strawberry cake. Looked like rain this mng: set out two rows of red and white cabbage plants, Hoed tomatoes and did other work. Pretty tired to-night. Went down to Coles and into lake and washed the dirt off. Think I will sleep better to-night. Patsy commenced mowing the cherry orchard and took the mowing machines and horse-rake out of my barn.
P. Cole caught 21 pike in 2 ½ hours at W. Pt this morning.
Sat, July 8.
Went to Station at 5 P.M.
Sun. July. 9
Very hard thunder shower from 12 M. to 12:30 P.M.
Mon. July 10
Chet came at sunrise. I came ashore soon after. Stopped at Point and got life preserver (Mariquita) and told Porter’s folks to keep Chet’s boat hauled up where it would be safe.
Got beets, Cabbage + tomato plants at Henry’s. Set beets in my garden. Mrs. M. M. Carey + Albro came to have me hang paper, + carried me over to Chet’s. Chetsie seemed to feel a little better than he did last week. I thought, but I don’t know. He came and sat beside the steps and snugged up close to me. Poor little fellow he looks poor + weak. They all went to Colchester and will take him to see the Doc, immediately. I hope something may be done for him.
Expected to pick cherries to-morrow but Raytee says no.
Tues. July 11.
Another very hot day. In garden, put out onion sets few turnips also 15 “Royal Red” tomatoes.
Picked 14 qts cherries. Got crate at Henry’s.
Raytee + Senna + Blanch went to St. Ann’s.
Raytee wants the cherries I have in mng. and another bu. picked to-morrow.
The “leading citizens” trial commenced but Jack Powers didn’t show up + so was continued to 28th inst.
Wed. July 12.
Hot as hell again. Planted peas this mng. Picking Cherries.. Henry Cole helped me in the P.M. Took dinner with him. Had letter from Ruth at Colchester saying Chetsie had a tendancy to scurvy + had to eat bread + milk + fruit of all kinds. She asked me to go over to this place to see if all were right. I did + came home at 9 P.M.
Thur. July 13
Another hot day. Light shower mng. Set out 47 red cabbages. Picked Cherries. H. Cole + Eddie Sumner helped me about 2 hours + I had 36 qts. for Raytee to-morrow. Took me until 1:30 A.M. last night to pick over cherries so I didn’t sleep much + have felt badly all day.
Fri. July 14
Hot. Picked cherries. Went over to Chet’s in evening + found everything O.K. but folks not come yet.
Sat. July 15
Hot as ever. Dug weeds in morning. Raytee had order for the cherries in Monday mng. + Stone wants 10 qts.
Got Eddie Sumner to help + got enough to fill both orders
Folks came home baby looking better.
Sun. July 16
Our mutual friend took me to the P.T. + I went to Station + Chet came ashore to play until this mng. When he came back at sunrise. Had quite a talk with him about matters of general interest. Have got to work up the Mariquita and base-ball racket. On way home stopped at Benlaw’s to see Watkin’s people who are there and also Mr. and Mrs. King.
Watkins asked me to take breakfast and when I went in I was asked to wait a few moments as breakfast was not quite ready though every one was eating.
I was allowed to stand in the door and look on. As there was no plate for me on the table not a chair for me to sit on and no one brought one for me.
I waited as long as I cared to about 2 minutes I guess, and walked out and took my hat and left. I think it will be some time before I trouble them again with my presence.
I met Mr. Stone and Mrs. Miles at Pt. Mr. Miles gave me a good drink of good whiskey, and Mr. Stone wishes me to peel out dock this week if possible this week. I shall do my best to accommodate him.
Coming across So beach met two girls who were afraid of me and ran. I found 7 ladies at the end of the beach, who had come from city for a days outing.
They asked me to sit down and rest, and I told them of life of the L.-H. + the rescue of the Ball team etc and entertained them as well as I could for a time. They gave me lemonade, and a lunch of cake, cheese bread + etc and while eating it the gentlemen of the party, 4 in number, appeared with fish for a chowder. I was then asked to stay and have some chowder.
I was pleased to do as, and sit to work to build a fire place + build a fire + cook the chowder.
A cloth was spread on the grass, and we all sat around as we pleased + and ate dinner. I haven’t enjoyed anything so much for years. And they were all strangers, but very kind + friendly. I expressed my thanks, as well as I could + they asked me to call on them at any time when I go to the city.
Their names were Lloyd.
Called at Hardy’s a few minutes, Grandma Gates was talking to big “Fan” at a great rate. Hardy has two litters of pigs three weeks old, 19 in all.
Called at Raytee’s, to talk over the cherry business.
Called at P. Cole’s to read Saturday’s paper. No news in it.
Rained quite hard while there + Grandma Cole loaned umbrella to come home with. And now at 10. P.M. I find myself at home once more to settle into the harness in mng as usual.
Really the past 24 or 26 hrs. have been fraught with events of interest which I shall not soon forget.
Mon. July 17.
Hot again. Set Henry Cole + Eddie Sumner to picking cherries while I took letter + pails to Chet. Found Baby not improving as I could see. Poor little fellow. I am very anxious for him. When I came back Raytee had told boys not to pick + they had started fishing, so I am put back another day. It was a still day + se might have put out stones dock if they had stayed a few minutes longer.
Picked a few cherries for Howard tomorrow if he wants them. Henry went to city + delivered 10 qts to Mrs. Patrick 119. Buell ST. $100.
Aunt Em just me some peas.
Dug weeds most of the time.
Tue Jul 18
Hot as Hell again. Some breeze + some not. Dug weeds + picked 4 n 5 qts cherries. Howard took 6 qts + will take 4 more tomorrow. He brought medicine for Chetsie.
Circus Day, wanted to go but couldn’t. Glad now I didn’t, should have been quite [?], only about 7/10 now.
Dinner at Henrys. Went after Sugar got 1 ¾ I believe.
Wed. July 19
Hot again. Day opened with heavy thunder shower and a big beautiful rainbow at sunrise. Cleaned for a time. Went over to Chet’s + while there about 9 a.m. a still heavier + blacker one swept past. Mostly to southward.
Carried Chetsie a banana which he ate without ceremony. I had a few apples also, and picked a few berries on the way.
He seems a little stronger, I think but the medicine they got for him is awful bitter + he hates to take it.
I picked some peas + when I told him they were for papa, he laughed + tried to talk + looked in the bag + took some out + held them up + said papa! papa! Poor little one, I hope he may get strong and weather the gale.
I got home + Howard called + paid $1.00 for cherries, then I started for L.H. got at far as Cole’s + found wind rising. Took dinner at Cole’s. Henry went to Shafer’s to work this mng, Pete + wife picking cherries.
Eddie Sumner + I started at 4 PM for Station but got no further then Halls Point. Wind came up harder from N.W. and we turned back + landed just ahead of a big breeze + another shower. Shall try it again in mng if wind is easy.
Thu. July 20
Left at 5 a.m. 7. Station at W. Pt. Eddie Sumner with me.
Before we reached Halls Pt. wind came down from N.W. quite stiff. Very hard rowing. After through Pass drifted over to W. Pt. Tried to signal Chet but thunder shower drove us to cottage, an hour later we went to Station. Landed at S. corner. Got breakfast and returned to Pt. + made new horses + drew plank +c down for Stones dock, but before we could put it together fresh breeze came down from N.W. again and put a stop to it. Water had been calm previous to that time for several hours. Very hard rowing to Pass. Not very hard rowing but very rough water from Pass to home. R.L., Patrick and friend fishing at Pass. Quite cool to-night.

Worked in Garden and Eddie picked 7qt cherries for Charlie Hoffman or rather Eddie Sumner picked them for me while I worked in garden etc.
We then delivered cherries and went over and put out Stones dock and went to Station and Chet came ashore. Porters people at Tuckers again.
Watkins fishing at Pass. Women have it in for me next time I go there, but I am not going.
Sun July 23
Hi came fishing around Station and asked me to take dinner at Camp but wind kept me at Station all day. Chet came about 9. A.M, but wind came also and I didn’t feel able to risk it. Left at 6:20 and landed at Coles at 8:30.
Mon July 24
Rainy. Packed 1/2 bu black cherries alone at Henry’s. Dinner there, Supper at Chet’s.
Went over with pail and letter. Chetsie is looking better, took me into garden to pick peas for papa, and showed me where papa climbed ladder to fix chimney.
Tue July 25
Rainy again and quite cool. Tried two or three times to pick cherries but rain stopped me. Eddie Sumner helped me.
Henry gave me 150 turnip plants which I put out besides 27 red cabbage, and 52 tomato plants. Eddie helped in garden.
Got 50 baskets of Raytee and paid 20 cents for them this evening.
Fri July 28
Finished picking cherries.
Rain every day this week until to-day.
Sat July 29 At Station
Picked pear. Straightened out things all round and started for Station with Eddie Sumner about 2.P.M. Went by W. Pt. and found the dock safe. Chet and Eddie came ashore about 5. P.M.
Sunday Jul 20
The rainiest day I ever saw. Steady and hard. A thousand swallows after millers. One came and took a miller off the window sill within 4 inches of my face as I sat with my head resting on my arms.
Monday Jul 31
Heavy gale from N. hardest at 2 P.M. Mod. at 5 P.M
Sick headache all day. Ate very little. A Very bad P.M. and night. Could hardly get to tower with lamp. Nearly fainted. Chills and fever and ache all over, sick headache and all combined to make at a very long night of pain and misery. But I had it all to myself. With Chet’s fur coat and the bed clothes on I shivered with cold and with nothing on I felt as if on fire.
