April 1 Friday (Good Friday).
10 p.m. Cloudy and stormy S. wind all day with some rain in a.m.
Helped Henry all day painting Smoking-Room took dinner and supper, but came home early. Very dark and damp thought not cold tonight. As the wind blew today as it is to blow the next 39 or 40 days. Let us see. Johnny Morrison called.
Sat Apr. 2.
8p.m Wind S a.m. shifted to W+NW rest of day storm conditions continues prevailing all day but no storm here. Helped Henry paint sink room. Took dinner and supper there and Aunt Em gave me a basin of baked beans to bring home. Burt Hines called. Alma not as well. Back feels pretty bad going to bed right away. Received catalog and price list of Ozone Generators from Harper and Co.
April 3 Sunday
9 PM N. Wind. & Snow (ground covered) A.M. but sunny and snow going in P.M. wind N.W.
Did nothing all day but stay at home and straighten things a little.
Monday the 4.
9 PM Wind S. in mrg, Wsterly in PM.
What a good day! Borrowed Aunt Em’s tin washing machine and washed a undershirt 1 pr overalls. 1 frock, towel and hdkf.
Cleaned up all the brush between house + barn + piled them on apple tree stump for burning. Looks quite neat around there now. Also cleaned some of the brush along side of my garden and having quite a lot of cherry + apple wood.
At Henry’s this evening. Burt there Alma better. Henry painting pig-pen, but paint too thin I guess. Ducks commencing to fly. Saw another gull, also a big hawk.
A big lump on left of my neck just below shirt collar has troubled me for two or three weeks and seems to be growing larger and more sensitive every day. And don’t know what to do for it or with it.
Something seems to be growing I guess inside the lower lid of my right eye. My back aches badly all the time and I feel pretty bad somehow, though I manage to keep around, and do all I can.
April,5. .
8 P.M A summer day. Wind S. A.M. shifted to Northerly in P.M. and is there tonight.
Sid wanted to borrow hip boots.
Helped Henry paint pig pen from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. Took dinner and supper.
Chet came at 11 A.M. to go to W. Pt. but didn’t need me. Ice has commenced to move in the Lake and is piled up around Station and within 2 or 3 feet of walk.
Back pains me pretty bad all the time.
Don’t hear from the Modern Publicity Co. Wonder if they intend to ignore me because I wrote them on brown paper with a pencil.
Chet brought hand pruner and tomorrow I must try and trim trees and clean up brush.
Wed 6.
8:20 P.M. A good old summer day. Warm and smoky. Wind very light all day. Southerly and Westerly.
Trimmed the five apples trees on the back of the house, and cleaned up the branches.
Hustled All day.
Henry and Patsy burned over the meadow.
Henry called to see me and we tried a bottle of Elderberry.
Went over to Henry’s this evening but he was over to Hines
.
Pretty tired. Back is bad as ever and my eye giving me great discomfort.
Thursday 7.
9 P.M.Sick enough to die since 2 A.M.
One of my old bilious attacks.
Patsy drawing manure, called this P.M.
Can’t get out tonight.
Friday 8. .
9 P.M Working again in the cherry patch. Chet came about 11 A.M. and I went with him to W. Pt.
Ice out between Point and Benlaw. Chet took dinner with me on return.
Henry’s this evening. Feeling much better. A lovely day.
Saturday, April 9th
Henry came over and helped me burn brush this A.M. I also cleaned out the barn of chaff 10 loads. Burned grass around house P.M.
Sunday, 10th
Regulation day, washed form shirts A.M. had only got done washing when Chat and his mother drove in. They stopped about two minutes + went down to the old place. Five minutes taken away + Johnnie Morrison came in for half an hour. Took a good bath and went over to Henrys about 6:45
Monday, 11th
Mail order biz.
Received on Friday last an “ad” and intrusions from Publicity Co. also description Cat + price list of Ozone Generator from M. Harper + Co.
Answered both this morning.
Wrote Harper for prices + circulars on “vitalizer” and advised Pub. Co that I shall now mail the ad on date of April 18th to be printed in series of April 24th in NY Sunday World.
Good day, burned grass beyond the barn and around the house. Good luck.
Pulled up and cut close all the rose bushes near the Cedar in the yard and raked the yard clean.
I cleared the hedge this side of the barn and my days work showed pretty well. Bert Hines called, returned papering brushes and borrowed pruners. He will save about 200 raspberries for me.
At Henry’s this evening writing to Harry and Charily.
Tuesday 12th
9 P.M Rain and snow this morning. Blowing and cool all day with rain and wind.
Henry and I made new steps for my door. Haven’t felt as well today, work a little too hard yesterday. Back paining me pretty bad. Raked the lawn what I could. Chet came about noon and went to W. Pt. some one had taken his little boat and left it unfastened, Floating were the water came from lake in to cove. He took dinner with me, and I told him of the mail order scheme and let him take home all the literature connected with it.
Expected him again Thursday. Ice moving to northward and piling up of curse around the station.
Peter B. Cross,tax lister called at dusk told him how I am situated and hope through his intercession to get a release from taxes.
At Henry’s this evening. We expect to go to the city tomorrow. Quite cold tonight.
Wednesday 13th
9 P.M. Cold all day. Freezing this morning.
Went to city with Henry.
Chet came and we went to West Point. Ice breaking up, but not breaking up much. Lake clear on west side two miles beyond station. Ice piled up at station as high as window sills.
At Henry’s this evening. Burt Hines there and brought the pruners back.
Thursday 14th
Cold. Painted Henry’s kitchen. Sun and snow squalls all day. Got home at 2:30 P.M. raked and burned rubbish at this end of the barn. At home all the evening.
April 15: Friday.
9pm. Cold again, froze one fourth inch ice in pail. A little warmer in middle of the day.
Raking and burning all day.
Finished everything the other side of the path. Chet went to w. pr. Stopped for dinner on return. Brought a lot of papers and gave me $5.00+ put plasters on my back.
Dr. J.W. Merrows agent called.
At Henry’s this evening.
Aunt Em gave me a pail of new Indian meal.
Quite cold tonight.
April 16. Saturday.
Cold again, snowing.
Warmer, sun shining pleasantly and snow slowly disappearing in places.
Mailed letter to Dr. Merrow: E. D. Watkins, and woman’s magazine. Not much out of door work to-day.
But very little done anyway. Partly mended pair of overalls, and made a lot of hash.
Renewed subscription of Woman’s Mag.
At Henry’s this evening, took supper. Johnny- cake and dried apple pie. Aunt Em gave me some potatoes, and some beets for seed.
Thawing all day in the sun, but freezing to-night. North wind all day. Good sugar weather.
Backaches as bad as ever to-day.
Got a new cell for my galvanic battery last wed. Used battery on my back last night and this morning. I’m not looking for great results however so soon as this. Snow fell about an inch I guess, but lots of it had gone.
Expect Chet tomorrow to go to the station if it is possible. I dread the trip and shall be glad hen he has settled there for the season.
April 17. Sunday.
9 P.M. Thawing a little all day. South wind.
Can see that the lake is open. Mended overalls and straightened things a little.
Chet and Ruth called at 1 pm on their way to the point. Chet coming tomorrow to go to Station. In the p.m. I studied mail order business and wrote to Mod. Pub. Co. to say I would not send “ad” until 25th Inst. and to Harper Mfg. Co. ordering two generators.
At Henry’s this evening.
April 18, Monday. Opened Station.
8 a.m. Sun shining pleasantly. Light south wind. Mailed order for generator, and letter to M. Pub. Co. Instructed Howard regarding money order, and new business firm.
Waiting for Chet.
Hope we may have good luck in reaching station, and that I may get back all right.
2 p.m. Just home from station. Chet + Roy came about 8:30 a.m. and we all went over, we took both the L.H. boats. Found everything in good shape though ice had knocked off some of the paint on blinds of the blind window. Quite a heap of ice still under the window on the walk. Wind southeasterly. Rather hard rowind from Station.
4:45 p.m. Just home again from the point with Mr. Stone.
He called for me at 2:36 and we went down to estimate quantity of lumber needed for repairs around his cottage. 200 ft. sq. edge boards 12 ft.-long.
10 pieces 2x4. 10 ft. 12ft.-long 10 lbs. 12 nails.
9:30 p.m. Just home from Henry’s. Colchester Reef lighted tonight for first time this season.
Mr. Douglas at Henry’s until nearly 9.
Henry cut up blackberries. Their 2nd calf came along today. No ice in sight in the lake, except a little along shore near Pt. A strip 4 or 5 yards wide.
Had good luck getting over and back, and had a ride both ways.
Back feeling pretty bad tonight.

April 23. Saturday
Mailed order to Harper Manufacturing Co. to send Vitalizers instead of generators. Mailed examination blank to Dr. Merrow. Will Parker came for me to hang paper at 9 A.M.
Tuesday April 26.
Arrived home at 6:0 P.M. from Parkers. Papered five rooms and got $5.00, Gus brought me. Had a very pleasant time and Mrs. Parker gave me a loaf of bread and a nice coconut cake.
Got 2 quarts milk at Henry’s this evening for Chet.
Letters from Harper. Will Send Vitalizers, and did return the $.50 the balance due me.
April 27 Wed.
Cold and damp morning. Sunny and warm Midday. Cold and cloudy evening.
Started for Station 4 A.M. arrived at 6.
Baby sick last night but better when I was there. Pretty as he can be wasn’t much afraid came to me a little while. Sink drain stopped up.
They want to come ashore Sunday and return Tuesday.
Lots of ducks in the cove.
Must get eggs and milk on Sunday.
Pretty tired when I got home. Dinner at Hardy’s.
Sold my wood to Hardy for $1.00. He drew up my water bbl, beans, a bag of coal etc. this PM.
Barlow who was on Porter’s place left last Friday. Edie says Porter’s family is moving back.

April 28. Thursday.
April showers and sun shine all day. Not very cold.
Picked over apples, took potatoes and beats out of the ditch and cleaned out the cellar.
Carried a bushel of poor apples over to Henry’s calves.
Aunt Em gave me some horseradish to set out.
Cleaned out a lot of wild wormwood A.M.
Mended shirts and read papers P.M. As it was rainy
At Henry’s this evening, took supper and after that we divide a qt of Am. Wonder peas, which we got of Burpee.
Peter Cole planted peas today and I mean to plant some tomorrow.
Baking beans this evening and writing to Burt Perry.
Instructed Howard to bring Ex. package from Winooski.
Friday April 29th
Rainy and warm all day and this evening. One dozen Vitalizers came today per Howard.
Ex. $.80, green circlers 73. and red 35.
Folded them all and enclosed 35 of each in envelope ready to mail. Got 67 raspberry plant of Bert Hines. He showed me paper hanging he had done and fountain pen, handkerchiefs case, sleeve holders , “his girl” had given him, all very nice.
Alma looked much better than before. Carried her a bouquet of mayflowers and a bottle of wine. Frank went to city, put handle in my hoe and adjusted Henry’s corn sheller that he and Pat couldn’t manage. Took dinner afterward and Aunt Em gave me some currant bushes. Set them and raspberries all out then. P,M. Meant to have sowed peas but rained prevented. Pat harrowed the garden. Did a very poor job.
Saturday April 30
Another rainy day. Wrote M. Harper & Co. proposal to send all orders with cash to be forwarded, by them directly to my agent & I’d pay certain percent or whatever what was the most fair for the trouble, thus saving me Ex charges.
On my way to visit Will Coates and his wife I called at Lyndall’s and visited with Arthur, who showed me plants, in hotbed and young chickens.
Called at Spaulding’s. Mr. & Mrs., at home. Called at shop and Charlie was painting a “keep out” sign.
Uncle Willard and Johnny threshing beans at Willard’s farm. Called on Mrs. Smalley. Ruth frying doughnuts. She is going to give me a recipe for making some like them. Mrs. Smally gave me a couple and some maple sugar, and another to put in my pocket. Chet came in for minute. He and Tom M. were setting out cedar trees around the house. I made my way across the neck with some difficulty, water is rising, but reached Will’s alright.
Will was laying cow stable floor.
Took dinner, and had a real good visit afterward with Will and his wife. I like her first rate.
Showed me wedding presents, furniture, and etc.
They have everything nice and comfortable, and have a very pleasant view. It seems as if they might enjoy life.
Will gave some Columbian raspberry plants, and some greening apples, also a glass of cider that suited me to a T.
I had a very pleasant visit, and am glad I paid it. It was my first, since they were married.
In my return I stopped at Jack Morrison’s, Mrs. M, and Johnnie gave me a yellow rose of Texas, and a couple of sprouts from a honeysuckle tree or shrub.
I hope I may be able to make all plants and shrubbery live. At Henry’s this evening, Burt came in. Aunt Em was moulding butter. Burt had been having a terrible time churning.
A card from Ray Carey advises me that she will go West Point tomorrow if wind is favorable, so I must waltz around in the morning to get ready to go with her.
Have to sweep up, eat breakfast, wash dishes, set out berry plants and shrubbery, get milk and eggs at Henry’s, and in fact straighten out everything.
The old hard pain caught me across my chest again when coming home and I had to stop two or three times to rest and take breath.
