| Job Description |
As a Reading Mentor, you meet for approximately one hour a week on Tuesdays, one-to-one, with an elementary school student. First and second grade students have their lunch period from 11:30AM to 12:30PM; third, fourth and fifth grade students have lunch from 10:45AM to 11:30AM Reading Mentors may want to bring their own lunch; books are available at the school site. The Reading Mentor may touch base weekly with the School Coordinator, who is an EW! VT staff member, at the school site. The Reading Mentor has lunch, talks with and listens to the child, reads aloud with the child, and encourages the child’s interest in reading by exploring books and word games together. The Reading Mentor also provides positive, consistent, weekly attention. |

How To Become a Reading Mentor |
Volunteers in the Everybody Wins program submit an application form which includes a work address and phone number, the names of personal and work references and a signature which signifies commitment to the program standards. Download the "Everybody Wins! Vermont Power Lunch Reading Mentor Application 2006-2007" application: Microsoft Word OR PDF format. In addition, mentors must sign a confidentiality agreement . Mentors are encouraged to sign a media release: Children love to have their picture taken with their mentor! All volunteers at Shelburne Community School must be fingerprinted and have an FBI criminal background check.
