What is Student Assistance Program?

Student Assistance Programs can be found in schools throughout the country and in Vermont.  An SAP program is designed to but not limited to identify students with substance use problems, intervene and when necessary, refer them to community agencies for more specialized care. 

 

What can an SAP Counselor do for my child?

  • give educational presentations to students
  • run educational support groups
  • carry out skill building activities to help kids cope with issues such as stress, peer pressure, and anger management

 

What can an SAP Counselor do for my family?

  • provides educational materials on adolescent substance use
  • direct families to appropriate resources to meet the needs of the family
  • meet with concerned families

 

What can an SAP Counselor do for my school?

  • complements existing programs such as guidance programs, school-based health programs, classroom substance abuse prevention curricula, and peer leadership programs
  • train school staff to deal with troubled students

 

What can an SAP Counselor do for my community?

  • responds to the needs of their own school/communities needs based on local data
  • work with community resources to develop services for students
