Activities Developed by Teachers With Information Technology

Title Monthly Math Scores (with Graph Club ® - ongoing since spring 2002)
Grades  3 - 4 - 5
Teacher(s) John Madden (jmadden@cssu.org), and Monique Tetreault
Resources  Graph Club ®, monthly math worksheets
Time Spent One hour to setup graphs, 15 minutes per month
Setting Classroom and computer lab
Abstract After parent volunteers correct monthly math scores, students compile monthly math scores on paper.  Simple data tables for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division results on a monthly basis were created by the students and then converted into graphical formats with Graph Club ® in the computer lab.  Printed versions were shared with the student’s parents.  The data is maintained on a monthly basis by the students in their respective classrooms or in the computer lab.
Positive Aspects
  • Students and parents are able to see growth in specific math skills.

  • Their own graph motivates improvement for the next month.

  • Using technology for efficiency - truly integrated - students become independent with the program.

  • This activity allows students to integrate technology with math on a year- long basis.

Challenging Aspects (or "When I do this again ...")
  • Initial set up takes longer than expected for 3rd graders, next time  would have them set up an “Addition” chart fully without monthly scores and then use Save As feature for “Subtraction”, “Division” and “Multiplication”.  This will save time creating all four charts.
