Setting Field Trip, Classroom, Computer Lab
Abstract Students visited Shelburne Farms while studying Colonial America.  Each student was asked to create a picture related to their learning.  Younger students labeled their picture while older students wrote a short description.  At the end of the unit, the teacher linked each student's slide together and shared the work with the entire class via an LCD projector.
Positive Aspects
  • A project-based introduction to KidPix®.

  • Reinforcement of learning

  • Real pride in their work

  • Working with Kathy Gallagher (the lab coordinator)!

Challenging Aspects (or "When I do this again ...")
  • Helping all the students at once....it is helpful to bring a parent volunteer to the lab if possible
Example 1 CA2.jpg (56941 bytes) (Click on the image to see an enlarged version)

From the student: "This picture is about when the settlers came.
  They built wooden houses."

Example 2 CA3.jpg (46066 bytes)  (Click on the image to see an enlarged version)

From the student "This is a picture of a house in Colonial
America.  It was built out of wood.  It was hard to build because
they had to do all the work themselves with their neighbors."
