At the recent Annual Conference of the National School Boards Association, held in Atlanta, the program, "Building Bridges With Music Technology", created by Diana Burritt, Music Educator at Shelburne Community School and David Cranmer, RETN Production Coordinator, was honored as an "Exemplary Arts and Education Technology" Salute Award.

The award, sponsored by the ArtsEdge Program of the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, DC, was one of three selected nationally. Each program was highlighted before the daily keynote at the conference and honored at a special luncheon.

"Building Bridges With Music Technology" was collaborative Grade 3 music class with students in Shelburne and Charlotte sharing their original compositions with each other and the community.

Students worked in teams to create their own compositions and corresponded using email. They presented some of their works in April, in a live program cablecast from each classroom, receiving feedback from residents at the Shelburne Bay Retirement Community. Then, in May, both classes
held a live, interactive class to share their final works. RETN worked with students at both schools to serve as camera and crew for the 2 productions.

Diana and David created a 5 minute video outlining the project and submitted it to be judged as an "Arts Showcase" program. The video was chosen for one of three awards given and was shown to the entire conference on Saturday, November 10th.  Diana and David participated in a round table discussion of the project with other ArtsEdge award recipients.

In addition to being honored for this program, Diana and David also presented a workshop on their "Life and Music of Beethoven" program. This was a collaborative project that culminated in a live program from Diana's classroom, shown on RETN in February, 2000.

Diana Burritt and David Cranmer (RETN) Present
at National School Board Association Conference

Diana Burritt, K-2 Music Educator at the Shelburne Community School, and David Cranmer, Production Coordinator at RETN co-presented at the fall conference of the National School Board's Technology and Learning Conference held in Atlanta, GA, November 6-9, 2001.
Their presentation highlighted, "The Beethoven Project," developed by Diana.  A Music Enrichment Group of K-6 students made an interactive television program on, "The Life and Music of Beethoven," for their winter project, which was shown throughout the District.
Students selected their roles as researchers, reporters, or production crew.  Using the Internet as a research tool, they each developed their own presentations.  Working with RETN (Regional Educational Television Network), they were able to create and produce their own show.  The program was shown live on the cable system with classrooms from two other schools participating by phone.

Read about our live broadcast with Charlotte Central School!

In Music this week, the kindergarten students have begun their Music Detective Notebooks. They will be writing the rhythms to the melodies as they are clapped. Parents will try to "decode" the secret rhythm patterns when completed!
First and second graders have participated in two interactive programs with students from Hinesburg and Charlotte, in preparation for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra concert. Hinesburg 6-8th graders presented, on live television, the Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Families. (Kindergarten students participated in the first) Shelburne and Charlotte were connected by phone. It was fascinating to have the Adventurers ask questions, and hear their voices on television! Shelburne will be the host, broadcasting live, on April 10th.

First and second graders are also learning to play the keyboards. We have completed our fifth song, "Swinging," which uses both left and right hands. We are reading the notes from the staff. Each song learned, is available to students to take home. If your child is taking piano lessons, please send in the name of the book they are presently working on, and I will individualize their instruction to meet their needs.

Throughout the year, all students have the opportunity to study a variety of composers.  Through guided Internet use, students will research their lives, as well as listen to sound files of their music.

The Adventurers Team enjoyed a trip to the Flynn Theater to see the Vermont Symphony Orchestra present, "Midsummer Night's Magic."
Our last Composer of Study was Felix Mendelssohn, and the music he composed for Shakespeare's play, "A Midsummer's Night Dream."  I have included various links which include the following:

1. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)-pretty detailed information.

2. Felix Mendelssohn-(From thinkquest.org)

3. Shakespeare Magnet Poetry-just like refrigerator magnet poetry!
