Students
in Shelburne grades 1-3 share their knowledge |
On December 11, 2002, 60 students from 1st-3rd grade presented a live broadcast to the Charlotte and Hinesburg Schools, as well as to our communities. Students on the Rainbow team have been studying India, and along with the Discover team third graders, presented facts about this country, and taught the students in the participating students a dance from India.
We were pleased to have Deepthi, a South Burlington dance instructor, join us for our broadcast. Deepthi is from India, and graciously volunteered her time, and her home, to teach Diana Burritt, Danielle Trasciatti (Music Ed.) and Sarah Peake, Vasanthi Bharathan, and Monique Tetrault.

Working
across the Chittenden South Supervisory Union and with the Regional Educational
Technology Network, music teachers in Charlotte, Hinesburg, and Shelburne have
created and implemented a multi-cultural dance program throughout the 2002-2003
school year. Students in grades K-5 have presented dances and information about
the countries studied. Each class' performance was cablecast live on RETN
(Regional Educational Technology Network) to the
participating schools and their communities. Participating classes were
connected via telephone to the originating class for Q&A. This program is
integrated with classroom teachers and their curricula.
Thanks to RETN and Adelphia
Cable for making these broadcasts possible throughout our District.
Our first 4 broadcasts this year have been so successful, we are planning more for the rest of the 2002-3 school year. The schedule and topics studied will be posted after the 1st of the year.
Please see Upcoming Events for our schedule, as we've added more broadcasts!
Kindergarten
students are enjoying our new singing and movement activities. They
are discovering the difference between their speaking and singing voices, and
practicing concepts including fast/slow, loud/soft, and high/low.
Students are creating 4-beat patterns, using quarter and eighth notes, as well as quarter
rests. We have added the G-clef (Treble clef) and time signature to our
patterns. Each child creates a pack of index cards, adding to them each time a
new note is introduced. These packs will follow students through second grade.

out our work!
We continue to progress through our dictation notebooks. Kindergarten students
are writing the rhythms to the patterns they hear.

Kindergarten, first and second graders have started our international dance unit. Using the Phyllis Weikart sequential dance approach, we are learning many dances from around the world. Working in small groups, students have started creating their own dances.
