Live Beethoven Broadcast!

EN00517A.gif (949 bytes)All 200 first and second grade students are beginning their songwriting unit.  Each student, working alone or with a partner, will create a 4-8 measure song, using the pentatonic (five-tone) scale. The first step is to create rhythm patterns. Students are using quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes, as well as quarter rests. We will post some of these patterns, and our progress as through the song writing process.

Technology

 wpe1.jpg (19935 bytes)
All K-2 students are reinforcing their music skills through the use of our technology.  Kindergarten students are using the Music Ace software program to practice the lines and spaces of the staff. They enjoy using the "Doodle Pad" to create songs, as well as the "Jukebox" to listen to the music of Bach, Beethoven, and other composers. (Please see software resource link at bottom for more details)

First and second graders are studying Georg Friderich Handel. (1685-1759) They are learning  how to locate information about his life and music through the guided use of the Internet, as well as through software, library resources, CDs and cassettes.
Internet Preferences are set to direct the students to our school Homepage. By using the links on this page, ("The Audition Room") each child can locate and play a sound file, and find at least one new fact about this amazing composer.  There's also a Timeline, which helps students connect with other composers during the same Period.
Information found is added to our bulletin board.

To listen to some of Handel's music, including the Messiah, please check the Classical Archives.

Our favorite link:   "The Audition Room."   We refer to this link often, as it contains a vast amount of sound files of the Great Masters of Music.  The list is constantly growing, so please check it often.

Our Composer of Study last winter was Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart.  After listening to "Mozart's Magic Fantasy," one of our first grade students wrote a summary of the opera. You may read it by going to Sasha's Story.

Other interesting sites for parents, too!

Click on  Mona Lisa to go to terrific site, maintained by the John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx.  You'll find a wealth of information about Mona Lisa, as well as the music of Leonardo DaVinci.  (Did you know he wrote music?)  Take a minute and sign their guest book, as they appreciate the feedback.

Here's another great art resource.  Natalie Williams has put a tremendous amount of time and effort into this project.  I feel as though I'm taking a tour through a virtual museum!  Enjoy!
