According to studies in Puget Sound Basin from
1987 to 1995, types of
pesticides were detected in urban streams.
Findings: Twenty-three pesticides were detected in
water from urban
streams during rainstorms and the concentrations of
five of these
pesticides exceeded limits set to protect aquatic life.
Three of
these pesticides were Diazinon, Simazine and Lindane.
Almost half of
the twenty-three pesticides detected in stream water
had little or no
retail sales according to a 1997 survey of pesticide
sales from home
and garden stores in King County. Three of these
pesticides
(triclopyr, atrazine and simazine) were found at more
than 60% of the
study sites. This indicates that these pesticides
are being applied
to non-residential urban watersheds such as rights of
ways, parks and
recreational areas (“Pesticides detected in urban
streams during
rainstorms”). People should be aware of these
pesticide spills and problems, because it effects us and the environment by
poisoning our water.
