Another grand display of N. Light tonight.
Sun. Apr. 2
Last evening while reading about 9, I felt sharp pain coming in right side of neck, shoulder and arm and through my body just below collar bone and also lower down. The pains were so severe that I slept but little until after 6 AM today.
Today pain hasn’t let up at all. But I have managed to set to rights my pantry, wood-room, bedroom and closet. Every time I breathe it cuts me like a knife and I am obliged to made a great effort to write.
Henry called about 2 P.M. I was very glad to have him drop in. I gave him some of my apricot and apple pie and a doughnut. I wish some one would drop in now for it seems as if I should fly before morning. The pain is sharp like that of a sprain. Maybe its neuralgia for this P.M. at one time for about 15 minutes my teeth on right side if face, and me left eyeball jumped and pained me as if almost made me crazy. It lasted only a short time, however and I have not felt it since. I am glad it is on right instead of left side.
Hope I may be able to go with Chet to the Point if he comes to-morrow, but I feel awful basd to-night. I am chilly and feverish by spells and my head feels as exactly as if there was one of these little gasoline motors running and snapping of a 20 mile per hour gait.
It has just occurred to me that the pain is probably caused by Kalsimining of which I did quite a little on Thur and Friday.
Mon. Apr. 3 1903
Warm and pleasant. Had another bad night.
Went over to Henry’s and got Henry for Chet.
Washed dishes and swept up and got everything settled nicely before Chet came along with lighthouse boats on hay rack. We took them to the white gate and unloaded them. Chet went to the Point with the horses and I painted outside of one boat and a third of inside of the other before he got back. He helped finish and we came home. I gave him some of my best doughnuts to eat and some to carry home. I rode along with him and carried bag of swill to Henry’s and then rode up to Will Coates and took supper and visited until 9:30, and then came home bringing Will’s rifle with me. I arrived home at 10:20, read awhile, and went to bed. Bert and Frank recovered Hiram’s boat.
Tues. Apr. 4
A chilly day, though not very cold.
Slept until 7:40 AM I had to after being awake two nights.
Wrote Hiram that his boat had been recovered on Spalding or Henry’s beach and put in place of safety.
Made paste of Rye Flower and papered my bedroom, and commenced on kitchen. Both will look very nice. No callers.
At Cole’s this evening reading news for all hands.
Chet went to Greensborough to see farm last week but was not pleased with it.
Is going today to see one in Shelburne. Hope he will not buy this Spring.
Pretty tired tonight and back aches pretty bad. Wish I could be young again.
Thurs. Apr. 5
9 PM Rainy morning. Cleared before noon. Warm and comfortable though cloudy also this evening.
Finished papering kitchen but had to go to Burt’s after a little paper. Looks fine.
At Henry’s this evening. Cow having calf. Frank there. Got my brush for painting outside, but it is a cheap affair and not worth much. Drake flying north toward night.
Henry Cole came in the morning and stayed until nearly noon. Gave him a pie to take home.
Jew peddler called. Coming again in two weeks, and then I am to have a lot of things ready. Am feeling pretty tired and lame tonight. 10:30 PM Raining
Thurs. Apr. 6
9 PM Rain all night, and nearly all day with snow and hail. About 50 degrees.
Regulated my front room. Henry Cole here about 2 or 3 hrs.
Jew peddler called. No mail.
At Henry’s this Eve. New shirts- I never saw before. Brought oil for painting home. Cloudy Evening.
Fri. Apr. 7
7 AM 44 degrees. Sunshine until now. Clouding over, stormy in West. No wind here. Clouds from N.W PM. Nor-Westerly winds all day. Not very cold, but snow squalls and hail both came.
Picked over apples in cellar. Haven’t done much. Not feeling well.
Chet came, but was in a great hurry as usual so did not have much chance to talk over farming prospects.
Henry brought 20 ft. ladder and stayed an hour. He advises strongly against buying Hinesburg place. Uncle Reube called AM.
At Cole’s this evening. No war news. Called at Mrs. Tatroe’s. They will have money for me in a few days. Also called on Mrs. Raytee on hour.
Mr. Pryor of city died quite suddenly last night of heart failure.
Sat. Apr. 8 10 PM
Quite a cool day and squally all around.
Cleaned cellar of all rotten vegetables. Got a warm dinner and pared apples for pies tomorrow. Henry and Sid called, and Henry and I stirred up some paint. He tried to burn over the meadow but didn’t succeed very well.
At Cole’s this evening. Japs have commenced another advance, but there is nothing definite regarding it.
I can’t eat or sleep or do anything for thinking of Chet’s fever to buy a farm. I do hope he wont do it this spring for it seems to me that conditions are not yet right for it. Frogs have been out two or three nights already.
Sun. Apr. 9
7:30 PM Water in barrel outside froze 1/8 inch thick last night, but the day has been quite warm and pleasant.
Went over and inspected Hiram’s boat that Burt saved. It is not injured at all that I can see. Chet’s old oars are with it. I got a couple of cans to mix paint in.
Henry Cole came soon after I came here and stayed until 11:30 am. After he went home I made and baked pies. One of them an Elderberry, the first I ever made except a little one first as a test pie, but it proved all right as I guess the larger one will be.
My back aches pretty badly tonight.
Aunt Em gave me some buttermilk for pie crust and some sap-milk to drink, and I have drank quite a lot of it.
A little dash of rain about 7 PM cooled the air a little.
Mon. Apr. 10
9 PM Rainy day. Warm and foggy tonight.
So warm last night I slept but little. Washed dishes, mixed paint but did little else. Back very lame and painful. Sick-headache nearly all day. No callers. No mail. Sent letter to Prof. J. Malcom Watson, apology and explanation card to Hiram, relating to Boat and Oars.
Over to Henry’s with swill and jug for paint oil. Carried K. Oil can over. Jap and Russ squadrons are very near each other and have probably fought by this time.
Tuesday April 11 1905
Threatening AM rain PM and evening, light south wind.
Went after Henry Cole and put my boat up on the barn floor.
Dutchy Sumner came and said his mother wanted to make soap on halves. I didn’t understand.
Mopped kitchen and pantry floors, and was just making hash as Chet came for me to go to the Station a few days. Got ready and went to W. P. Both boats at White Gate and lots of ice on South Beach as couldn’t get them off so came home. Coming again tomorrow.
Chet has bought the John Gilmore place. We came back that way and looked it over. I like it better than I expected to. Went down to have Henry come up to take supper with me but he had just eaten.
