April 1903
Wed April 1, 1903
Another good day, but squally + cool.
Jack Senna called a few minutes this mng. Gave him a drink of cider. Vic Raymond called later. Gave him a drink also. Geo Sumner came, after some shingle to stretch Musk-rat skin on.
Charlie + Johnnie Senna came over and took dinner with me and found a hen’s nest with 10 eggs in it. Edson drew his boat down + put it in the puddle to soak it up. He also drew my big flat-boat down + I went up + held plow for him to plow a small spot for a few early vegetables. He tried to set Henry's saw but didn’t make out much, so I borrowed the set + did it myself. Have partly filed the saw, will try it later when finished.
Charlie + Johnnie helped me to draw Watkin's boat out of the barn + put it on horses, + I commenced cleaning it.
Gene Senna called 4 P.M. to have me go over to supper with him but I couldn’t I had to much to do.
Washed dishes + swept+ job through about 8 o’clock + then sat down to write up this record. Letter from Sister Mary yesterday.
Mrs. + Mr. Oaks sick. Uncle Em very poorly. Billy Churchill probably will never be any better. Clesson Moore dead, + Geo Gilbert had two slight shocks of paralysis. Bad news all around. Am feeling pretty bad myself these days.
Thu April, 2
Cooler + cloudy. So. Gale all + up to this time midnight. Rain a little while ago.
Washed towels, handkerchief, and a pair of overalls. Finished filing Henry’s saw. Feeling quite bad and shiftless to-day. Hope to feel better soon. It is very discouraging to feel entirely unable to do anything and so much to be done.
Called at Senna’s this evening + took supplies + asked him to get me a bottle of Dr. David Kennedy’s favorite remedy. Hope it will do me good. Mrs. S. gave me a pail of nice buttermilk.
Fri. April, 3
midnight. Cold + cloudy. March day Wind So. in A.M. Changed to No. with rain a little after P.M. and rose to a gale soon after continuing until now.
Feeling all broke up. Called at Hardy’s and + got tomato seed four kinds. Edie gave me some doughnuts + coffee.
Called at Senna’s + it rained so hard I didn’t leave there until about 9:20. Quite dark + still raining and growing colder. Borrowed lantern.
Sat. Apr 4
4. p.m. Freezing last night and today, with rain + snow. Gale from N. continued all night and is still raining. At 9. A.M. bank caved off and jarred the house.
3:30 P.M. another jar and another cave off.
Mr. Senna called for his lantern. Had bought potatoes of Barstow to plant. Stewed apple for pies but don’t feel much like making them. Rather shiftless.
Bought a bottle of “Kennedy’s Favorite Remedy”, 79 cents, today and am hoping it may do me good sometime.
9 P.M. - wind easier. Moonlight
Lots of flood wood here now. If I only had a boat and some one to help me get it. It will probably be the last chance this season. A very cold night. Regular March weather and after having so much pleasant weather it seems all the more disagreeable. My fire nearly went out this evening (coal) and I have only just eaten my supper. At home all day + evening. Haven’t had courage to venture out.
Sun. Apr 5
8 P.M. Cold. Thawing a little. Gale continued all night and until about sundown today from the north. Lots more of the bank along shore has been washed away.
Quite a lot of flood wood here but no boat to get it. Started soon after noon to go to Station thinking wind would go down soon but when I got to my boat I dared not take it out alone and besides it was frozen in. The ice was all over the cove frozen last night. Came back to Senna’s and took supper, shot at a mark, read and visited and finally have got home bringing Charlie Senna with me.
Wind is quite easy and if so in the morning will have to take an early start for the Station.
Mon. Apr. 6
10 p.m. Snowing some. Mts. show pretty white but cannot be very deep. Went to the Station alone. Ice an inch thick in and around my boat in the cove. Took half an hour to free it and launch it in the lake. Chet and Ruth well. Hard rowing from Station. My back very lame worse than for a long time. Dinner at Senna’s, called at Hardy’s, supper at Goodspeed’s. Letter from Mrs. Cary. Answering it this evening. Wind coming from the S. Looking for rain.
Tue. Apr. 7
Warmer. Nothing doing. Carried a pail of salted cucumbers over to Edie and some parsnips to Senna’s. George Prim called a few minutes. Mailed reports etc.
Rainy in P.M.
Wed. Apr. 8
A comfortable day. Vary little wind and little rain.
Filed big saw for Senna. Took it over at 4 PM, and sawed some wood. I stayed to supper.
Gene came home and brought his cousin Harry with him. Spent the evening there and had a very pleasant time.
Joe Bessett called an hour this A.M. + then went fishing. Geo. Sumner home from Montpelier after Jimmie, and fishing also.
Thru. Apr. 9
Went to Station early. Chet having sick headache, had made staging for painting tower. We rearranged some of the ropes, and made the attachments on the towers. I left there about 2 P.M. went to Pt. + inspected Stone’s cottage, O.K. then to Benlaw. Watkin's + Merrihew's cottage O.K. but door of boathouse blown off. Though it could not get away. Thence to pass but water 6 in too high to go under so came back to cove + landed near Dago village. Stopped at Senna’s to supper + spend the evening. Come about 9:30. Chet gave me $5.00. Thanks.
Fri. Apr. 10 Good Friday
Taken with a terrible chill and weakness as I left Senna’s last night and it seemed several times before I got here that I could never do it. I did after a time, no fire, no whiskey + not a thing to do with and wholly unable to do a thing except crawl into bed where I rolled and groaned all through one of the longest nights I ever saw.
Raytee came after hay in mng + found me laid out, and built a fire for me + told Barstow’s folks + Mr. B came down at once and proffered services. Mr. Akey also called in the A.M., and again in the P.M. rubbing my back thoroughly 9 times with Scottish oil. Mrs. Bessett also came. Thora came down + made sage tea + brought b-fast, but I couldn’t eat. Edson, + Joe, + Charlie Senna came in evening + Charlie to stay all night with me. Sent by Howard for plaster. Sold hay to Raytee, Burger, + Clark.
Sat. Apr. 11
Better. Howard brought plaster, Thora bought gruel. Barstow came in several times. All very good to me. My medicine having great effect last night and today. Good stuff. Edson + Mr. B both here in the evening. Eclipse of moon, so Edson didn’t stay long, wanted his folks to see it. Edie + Adrian’s niece called + sold me some garden seeds.
Howard brought my plasters.
Feeling better to-night.
Hiram heard I was sick and called to see me, on his way to the Island.
