Have a fire? Call 911, Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department! This wonderful building was built in 1983. The volunteer organization started in 1941. There are twenty-nine firefighters that love to volunteer to help the town. The chief is Craig Wooster. The youngest fireman is twenty-one, and the oldest is sixty-seven. You have to be eighteen years old to be a fireman. The person who started the company was James Corey. The training course is one hundred forty-four hours long, three hours a week/ three weeks a month. They stay there about four to five hours a day. It was not a different type of business before.

The fire department does not have wings. It has two stories and the siding is brick. The roof is a triangle shape and the windows and the main door is rectangle. It does not have a porch and it was built in 1983.

Didn't they just do a fantastic job getting the fire out? Well if you have another one, call 911, Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department.

Town Offices

Do you need permission to build a house or want to try out a new sport? At the new Shelburne Town Offices you will be able to find these things.

The building is located in the middle of town and it is very noticeable. This is because it is 3 stories tall. The big doors and windows are plain. The roof is flat. The big basement is exposed and the siding on the building is made of bright red brick.

The beautiful old town offices are now the Pierson Library. The offices moved because they needed more space. The old building had 2 sections. One section was the town hall, which was built in 1928, and the second section were the town offices, which was built in 1992. The building they are in now was once called the Village School. It was built in 1927. It was the main school in Shelburne for 67 years. The first principal was Mrs. Mary Deyett. They stopped using the school in 1994. Mr. Mercaldo was the last principal. I never attended that school but he was my principal in 1st grade.

In the Town Offices you will find the Police Department, Town Clerk, Town Manager, Recreations Department, Planning, Zoning, Water, and Sewer Departments. They renovated 100% inside and changed the windows outside. There are 35 rooms and there are 80 people that work in the building.

So come on over and check it out it's really neat! You can find lots of things to do with Shelburne. If you need help in getting a permit or finding a sport to do, just ask the town clerk and you will be on your way and happy.

Post Office

Did you know that the Shelburne Post Office is going to move to a lot to the north of the current Post Office building? The Shelburne Post Office is 27 years old. It was built in 1973. It is built out of bricks and has double- hung windows. When you walk into the building you enter a lobby. The lobby is where people have Post Office boxes for their mail. There are currently two counters to service the public for purchasing stamps and to send packages.

You're probably going to ask why the Post Office is going to move. It is moving because they need more room inside. The old building will be knocked down and will be made into a bigger parking lot. Too bad the sliding hill behind the Post Office is closed for at least this year!

There are many people who work at the Post Office in Shelburne. Shelburne has seventeen people in all. Do you wonder how they sort all of the mail and get it to your P.O. Box? Some of the people sort the mail and put it in your box. Maybe you get your mail at home in a mailbox. There are people who deliver the mail to you. Shelburne Post Office doesn't have any mail delivery trucks. People that deliver the mail use their own cars.

These are some of the facts I discovered when I researched our Post Office. There are going to be a lot of changes in the new building. I hope you're excited to see the new building in action. I know I am.

Town Hall

Would you like to rent a hall to hold a fashion show, a craft fair, or have a Girl Scout meeting? Have we got a beautiful building for you! It's our grand town hall located in the middle of our town.

The Town Hall was built in 1928. It has always been a town hall. Today thirty people work there. It is deeply set back off the main road and presents its broad gabled end to us on busy Rt. 7. The other important thing about this beauty is the four tall Doric columns in the front. The siding is Flemish bond brick and clapboard. The building has a false front called boomtown. The final unique feature is its boxed pediment in the front.

The first Town Hall had burned to the ground in 1925 so Mrs. Electra Havemeyer Webb built the new one in 1928 to honor her parents after they had both died.

People go to the Town Hall for dog licenses, marriage licenses and other important things. So if you need to do any of these things or need a beautiful space to do something special in, be sure to remember our pretty Town Hall.

Pierson Library

"If you want to come and read a book,
You'll come to the Pierson for a look.
It's moved from where it use to be and turned into a library!"

In the early 1800's instead of building a new Methodist Parsonage to house the minister, the Stewards bought an old store building to use as a parsonage. The first minister who lived in the newly bought parsonage was Zebulon Philips. Since 1800 there have been 33 circuit riders (traveling ministers) living there.

The old Pierson Library has wings on the front and both sides. The building has two stories and an unexposed basement. The sides are cut stone. They look like big bricks that are white. The building also has a hip roof on the main part and the two wings have just flat roofs with railings around them. The trim is boxed pediment cornice and the doors and windows are plain. I think the Pierson Library is one of the prettiest buildings in Shelburne.

"Now there's no library there,
No books or anything to share,
At the good old library,
A place that's very fun to be!"

The Parade

By Jessica

When you visit Shelburne, you must take some time to enjoy the beautiful parade.

The parade was purchased, along with hundreds of acres of land by a captain, Benjamin Harrington. This happened in 1807. The parade is a large green on the edge of Shelburne Village. Originally, it was used to train the town militia. Today, families play, skate, and picnic on the parade. At the entrance to the parade, you will see a large stone that is dedicated to Captain Harrington. This boulder came from an old stonewall where Mrs. Harrington lived as a child.

So next time you want to have a picnic or go skating come to our beautiful parade.
