The Shelburne History Project
Do you have too many cups and you can't fit them in your cabinets? Then get some cup hooks for more room at Shelburne Corp. Shelburne Corp. is forty-four years old. It was built in 1958. It was built by GBI. They make at least ten million cup hooks in a year. They do not make ski poles anymore. There are only nine people that work there. There is only one shift.
Architecturally, the plan is irregular, with wings to the front, rear, and
side. There are two stories and the basement is exposed. The wall are made
of concrete and cut stone. The roof is flat with pediment trim. The door is
flat and the windows are plain in the top and the windowsills are slip sill.
The porches are platform or stoop. The feature is buttress.
As long as there is a need to hang things, Shelburne Corp. will keep on making
cup hooks.
When you're feeling glum come to the country store and have some fun! Eat some candy, and some chocolate fudge. Come here and you'll be the judge.
The Shelburne Country Store was built by P. Bacon in 1859. It is 143 years old. It is two stories high and is made of wood. It is painted red with green trim. It has an irregular floor plan, and has a wing coming off the back. It has a center gable roof, and a cupola with a weathervane of a rooster. There are four windows on the front with the twelve over the twelve panes.
This building is very interesting because it has a very interesting history (I think.) It has been a store in Shelburne for one and a half centuries. Before it became the store it was a cobbler shop, and also a barbershop. The building was bought by the Stern family in the 1940's. They added the second floor, which is where they lived, a small room on the north, and a long wing on the south, which was used as a wood working shop. They used to sell meat, tobacco, clam chowder, and candy. Not only did they used to sell food, but also people used to sit by the woodstove and play checkers. There were three separate shops behind the store. They were a blacksmith, a candy, and a card store. In the 1980's the shops were all connected to the store.
Now that is all I have to say!
I hope you have had some fun today!
Maybe you'll go there to buy some candy!
The Shelburne Country Store is very dandy!
If you want the best smoked ham and the crispiest bacon you've ever tasted then come to Harrington's where you can sniff out whatever you need. Make yourself at home, have a cup of coffee with a fresh baked muffin. They also have fine jellies, awesome homemade apple pies and cakes.
The Harrington family, who were also the owners, built Harrington's gradually
in 1873. It was built to put people to work. At first it was used as a smoke
house and restaurant and now its main source of revenue is the smokehouse
business.
Over the years there have been many changes to Harrington's the biggest being
its large mail order business. There are six stores in Vermont.
The building in Shelburne, which is not a smokehouse but is a retail store, is a dark green and has two stories with a gabled roof. The siding is wooden clapboard with cream trim. It has a plain roof with two gabled dormers and a bay window in the front. The front entrance has a plain pediment door head.
The next you're riding by and your tummy is screaming, "food, food"
then stop by Harrington's for their famous Vermont ham and cheddar sandwich
or some of their yummy soup.
Do you need some wire? Does your wire need to be slim and have the ability to bend around lots of pipes? Then Harbour Industries is the place for you!
Harbour Industries was built in 1965. The architecture found at this plant is typical of industrial buildings built in the mid 60's. The building is irregularly shaped, one story with an unexposed basement. The siding is metal and the entrance is brick.
Harbour Industries is important because it is a world-class business. They sell wire for people around the world and in eighteen countries. They have invented a new kind of wire called "SUREFORM", a bendable wire that is easy to form and holds its shape. The wire is used on the space shuttles and PCS systems. The boss is Dennis Dodd and it is an enjoyable place to work. They have a branch office in Chicago.
Now, as you can see, the best place for the best wire can be found right
in your hometown!
Do you have a boat and don't know where to store it? Come to the Shelburne
Shipyard and they can store it for you. The Shelburne Shipyard has lots of
boats. On a windy day you will need your coats.
The Shelburne Shipyard has been in business for 177 years. Some of the ships
have many gears. What is really amazing is that the Ticonderoga was built
there. Boats up to 28' in length are lifted into the water with a specially
designed forklift. Shelburne Shipyard was originally equipped to build 200-foot
steamships nearly 100 years ago. Today the Shelburne Shipyard doesn't make
boats.
The building is cross-shaped and it has at least 3 stories. The sides are made with painted clapboard. The hip roof looks really cool.
Come to the Shipyard with boats all around. It's the best boat place that you've ever found!
