Welcome
to the Adventurers ParentLink message for October 31st.
This week Adventurers learned about pumpkins and how to work in
cooperative groups. We learned couple of theories about how to tell
if a pumpkin has a few seeds or many seeds. Ask your child to explain
these for you. We estimated and measured the circumference and
weight of each pumpkin. We also estimated the number of seeds and then counted
them. The range for the seeds was 151 to 421. The total number of seeds from
all the pumpkins was 3,540. As we worked cooperatively, each member of the
group had an important job. Each group had to agree on a design for their
Jack-o-lantern and each person got to part of the design and part of the carving
on the pumpkin. They worked together to remove the pulp, separate the seeds,
and count them. On Thursday we enjoyed the display of jack-o-lanterns and
toasted pumpkin seeds.
Fireworks was the topic for Natalie’s Science Table this week.
She had beautiful photographs, lots of interesting information to share,
and a challenging word search with explosive words.
Estimating Jar:
This week Mark filled the jar with
crayons. Charlie was the closest so he gets to fill it with something new and
interesting for next week.
Snack:
Thanks to Caleb’s family for providing the Friday Healthy
Snack this week and to Emily's family for the Halloween Bat cookies.
Halloween:
It was
wonderful to see all the characters that arrived on Friday, we had witches,
superheroes, devils, vampires, a cowgirl and an indian girl, a kitty cat, TinTin,
Indiana Jones, and many more.
UNICEF:
This week Adventurers have been making announcements to the whole school to
inform about UNICEF and encourage everyone to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF when
they go out on Halloween. Next week will be very busy and exciting as we collect
the hundreds of UNICEF boxes from all the students at SCS. We'll be
sorting, counting all the donations (and learning lots about coins and counting
money).
ParentLink
Homework:
- On Monday morning, we're off to the Flynn Center for a
special performance of "The Velveteen Rabbit." On Friday we enjoyed a reading of
the classic children's book and discussed the story. The parentLink homework is
to draw a picture of a favorite toy, animal to bring in and share with the
class. (Remind your child to always put her/his name on artwork.)
- And
have fun Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF; don't forget to bring in the UNICEF boxes on
Monday!
Math Night!!!!!!!!!
We're
looking forward to Math Night coming up on Tuesday, November 11th; we hope your
family can make it, or at least make plans to help your child attend with
another family.
We could
use a few more volunteers to help set up activities, clean-up, and it would be
great to have some help with refreshments. If we can share the effort, it will
be fun for everyone. We hope you'll want to get involved.
Tuesday, November 11th is also a PTO meeting. Usually we ask
parents to accompany their children to Math Night, but we will gladly make an
exception so you can attend PTO while your child has fun with math games.
Craft Fair:
Next Saturday morning is the Adventurers Craft Fair work party.
It really is a lot of fun, there'll be lots of things to work on and not skill
required. Cutting, mixing, gluing, If you have any questions, or would
like to find out about how you can help even if you can't make it next Saturday,
please contact Leslie Borrok at 343-3751 or
leslie@borrok.com.
Please, please, please . . .
. . . as the weather gets chilly and wet (hopefully snowy), make sure
your child is prepared to enjoy recess outside with (depending on the
weather) hats, gloves, boots, snowpants. etc. (and that everything is labeled so
they don't end up in Mt. Lost&Found). On those sloppy days, be sure your
child has boots for recess and indoor shoes to change into (especially on
her/his gym day).
