Welcome to the Adventurers ParentLink message for September 5th

Creating a fun and safe learning environment:
Adventurers did an excellent job coming up with suggestions for guidelines to make our school year and classroom a great place to learn and be together each day.  You can see the list on the Adventurers homepage.  Apparently it was unclear for some new families that the ParentLink homework  should be turned in.  Although this weekly task is frequently not a paper/pencil activity, it is always something to be turned in, so please help your child complete the activity and bring it to school to share. (For this week’s activity read on!)

Math:
This week in math, first graders worked on writing numbers, making geometric shapes with the templates, and counting game with the dice. Please read the letter in your child’s math binders  about the first unit of Everyday Math. They also had the first “Homelink” these are assignments for the students to do at home to review a concept and to inform parents about the material we’re working on in school.  Please help your child add in special days, family birthdays, or other events to the September calendar and make sure your child brings her/math binder to school each day.
Second graders continued reviewing routines and best practices.  We also tried counting up and down from any given number by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.  We played an addition game, worked with Roman Numerals and clocks.  Each student now has a yellow folder which is to be kept in the Math Binder AT ALL TIMES.  This will hold any homework that is given for math.  Students know that they must write their name on the top of each assignment along with the time they began to work, and the date in Roman Numerals.  Second graders are also responsible for writing in a Math Journal each morning when they arrive.  A comment about the homework, the previous day’s lesson, or something mathematical they have noticed is all that is expected.  It should be brief… just a sentence or two.  It may help your student to process an idea with you at home before coming to class.

Literacy:
Students finished working on their “small moment” writing and shared with the class. They also started handwriting practice and spelling.

Library:
This week we heard a great story about Four Monkeys who went shopping with their mom.  It was a new twist on “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.”  It was a new twist on the ever-popular “Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed.”  Many students remembered to bring back their books and were able to select new titles.  Please help your student remember their books each week:  Group1 on Thursdays, Group 2 on Fridays.

“I Love to Read” records:
Each Friday,  Adventurers turn in their “I Love to Read” records and we add them up for a grand total for the week. We were very impressed with some of the reading totals. This week Adventurers read a grand total of 3,266 minutes!  Not everyone remembered to bring in their completed record, so we’re hoping for over 4,000 minutes next week.

Happy Birthday Gabriela!:

This week Gabriela completed her sixth trip around the sun.  We celebrated by counting in Spanish, singing the “La cucaracha” Birthday song, and a delicious treat of juicy fresh fruit.

Friday Healthy Team Snack:

For our Friday healthy snack, Abby’s mom brought in pita chips, cucumber slices, fresh tomatoes, humus with lemon, basil, and parsley.  Some of us helped her harvest the herbs and vegetables from the school garden.  There wasn’t a crumb left!  On Thursday, thanks to the Loiter’s fruit bearing tree, we had fresh plums.  They were the small purple one and were very sweet and juicy.
Several families have already signed up for a Friday snack.  Check the schedule on the Adventurers homepage and let us know which one works for you

Red Clover books:
We continued reading the 2008 Red Clover nominee books. We’ll read all ten books and then vote on our favorite and send in the results for the state tally.  You can learn more about the Red Clover books at:  http://www.mothergooseprograms.org/lit_red_clover_nominees.php

 Bus Safety!
On Thursday Mrs. Grover and Ms. Bauer joined us to discuss bus safety.  Our helper, Madeleine, played the part of the bus driver. Mrs., Grover and Ms. Bauer played children who forget many bus safety rules. Ask your child to tell you about some of the things they learned.

ParentLink Homework:
We love to fill the walls  with student artwork, so the ParentLink activity this week is for each Adventurer to create a colorful painting/drawing  of a favorite “small moment” in school; a snapshot of an actual moment s/he has experienced so far in school.

 In your childs backpack:
     - Hannaford Helps Schools flyer
     - Scholastic Book order

Parents:
We would like to update our FAQ’s on the Adventurers homepage.  If you have the chance we would greatly appreciate it, if you could look over these and tell us some questions that remain unanswered.
