Adventurers Parentlink: November 22, 2002.

Tonight is FAMILY MATH NIGHT!  We hope your family can join in the Adventurers classroom from 6:00 to 7:30 this evening. Thanks to Jos Vandal, and all parents and students who helped coordinate and lead the activities. Thanks also to those who contributed refreshments for the evening.

It was good to see everyone this week for parent conferences. We always appreciate having the opportunity to meet with parents and students to talk about the successes and challenges of the year so far.  As always, we hope you will contact us if there were any unanswered questions or concerns.

The Art Project for the week was to make cinnamon-applesauce ornaments to sell at the craft fair.  They smell wonderful and will make a delightful addition to any household. We will need a volunteer to put ribbons on the ornaments and pomander balls before the craft fair.  If you would like to help with this, please let us know.

The Challenge during choice time this week was to experiment with a maze program on the computer. And Delphine filled the estimating jar this week with fortune cookies. It turned out there were

90, which is exactly what Tyler chose for his estimate.  Way to go, Tyler!

This week we finished reading the Red Clover books. These are ten new picture books and elementary school students throughout Vermont will vote for their favorite. After reading each book, we discussed the text and the illustrations and how they work together to tell a story effectively.  The books we read this week were:

“Martin’s Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport

“Larky Mavis” by Brock Cole

“And the dish Ran away with the Spoon” by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

“What Pete Ate from A- Z” by Maria Kalman

“Rocks in his Head” by  Carol Otis Hurst

Please ask your child to tell you about the books we read this week and which book s/he will choose next week as the favorite. You can learn more about the Red Clover books at: http://www.vermontbook.org/nominees.html

Next week of course we will be thinking about all the things that we can be thankful for. The ParentLink homework activity this weekend is for your child to write down some of the things for which we can give thanks.

The total “I Love to Read” minutes for this week was 4870. At conferences we discussed with many the importance of regular and sustained reading time and how using the reading record can help develop this habit. But some families struggle to remember to record the reading minutes and remind their child to bring it in on Friday. At one conference, it was suggested that first and second graders could keep the “I Love to Read” record in the math binder. This way your child can record their reading time when s/he does math and always know where to find it on Friday.

Wednesday was our ELF workshop for the month of November and the theme was “Hunters and Hunted.”  We learned about some of the physical characteristics of predators and prey.  We sorted pictures of animals into these categories.  Then each cooperative group acted out a brief scene for their classmates about predator and prey. Each student also drew an imaginary animal that would have the ability to hunt for a particular prey.

Coming up on Friday December 6th we will be going to the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts for a performance of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. If you have not already contributed to cost of Flynn tickets for the year you can send in $6.25 or let us know if you would like to make use of the Adventurers Travel Fund. This will be an extended day for our kindergartners. We will have lunch in the classroom when we return so all students will need to bring a lunch and drink. Kindergartner families please send dismissal instructions.

Upcoming:

- Friday, November 22: Adventurers Math Night   6:00-7:30

Does anyone have a shallow two-drawer filing cabinet not in use, to donate for us to file math units?

We just want to check before we go out and buy one.
