Adventurers Parentlink: November 8, 2002.

Last Saturday morning's craft making for the PTO holiday craft fair next month was a huge success. Over 50 people came to help make neck and pocket warmers, paper making, and pomander balls. It was a lot fun and much was accomplished. We'll need more people to sign up to help on the day of the fair. We just need one adult and some students at the craft tables for one-hour shifts. We also need several more adults to help with the food concessions.

Kindergarteners visited the library this Thursday and learned about the distinction between fiction and non-fiction books. We read a non-fiction book about cows and learned some interesting facts. Then we read a silly book called "Click, Clack, Cows the Type." Unfortunately many kindergarteners forgot to bring their library books to school, so they were unable to get some new books to enjoy. Please help your child remember to return library books.

This week kindergartners examined coins with a hand lens and compared the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. They are trying to figure out who and what are on both sides of each coin, so it would be great if you could continue this discussion about coins at home this weekend.

First and second graders also continued their work this week with coins. We examined each of the U.S. currencies and also looked at many of the foreign coins that were in the collection. They emptied all the UNICEF boxes that everyone brought in brought all the money to the bank so we can send a check to UNICEF. But the bank says they won't know the total amount for two weeks, and we didn't want to wait that long, so they worked on a strategy to make a good estimate for how much money was collected. They weighed all the money and found out that there was 177 pounds of coins, then figured out that there was about $10.82 in one pound of mixed coins. They multiplied to estimate that there was about $1,923.25. When they added the $475 in paper money, they arrived at an estimated total of about $2,498. Last year the total was $2040, so we're very proud of the students at Shelburne Community School. We'll let you know the exact total when we hear back from the bank.

The challenge during choice time this week was to find all the continents by name on the talking globe.

The poem this week was a limerick by Edward Lear. It was very funny and we had many wonderful recitals so be sure to ask your child to recite it for you. First and second graders wrote their own limericks and shared them with the class.

McKinley filled the estimating jar this week with PVC pipe slices. It turned out there were 96 and Katelyn estimated 99, so she'll fill it with something interesting for next week.

The total reading minutes for this week was 4383. We're missing a few records again this week and we're still confident that we can make it over 6000 minutes if everyone brings in their record. Please make sure your child records reading minutes this week on the new "I Love to Read" record and brings it in next Friday.

On Monday we will talk about Veterans Day and for the ParentLink homework activity this weekend we ask your child to find out about any veterans in your family or any veteran they can find out about. Please have your child write down some of the things s/he learned and be prepared to share on Monday.

This Monday is also the November Adventurers Parent group. We'll meet for potluck dinner at 6:00, we're do some work on preparation for the Craft Fair and Math Night. All families are welcome!

Lucas' sister, Sidney, figured out that the 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States had the same mother and the same father because they were they same person, Grover Cleveland.

For this week, let's see who can match the following speakers with their famous quotes:

John Donne, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Patrick Henry.

1. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can for your country."

2. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

3. "Give me liberty or give me death."

4. "No man is an island."

5. "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

6. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation."
