Adventurers
ParentLink: May 16th, 2003
At the Adventurers parent group potluck and meeting this week, we discussed the results of the yard sale fundraiser. We raised almost $500, which was less than our goal, but still a respectable amount. This, along with the remainder of our craft sale transportation money and giftwrap funds that was left over from the Catamount trip, will give us the total amount needed for the trip to the Biodome and botanical garden in Montreal on June 5th.
We also discussed plans for the end of the year Adventurers family picnic on Thursday, June 12th. We will need volunteers to bring grills and a couple volunteers to be in charge of cleanup. (Burgers, hotdogs will be provided, families are asked to bring a salad or desert to share, and drinks, eating utensils, plates, cups for the family.) During the last week of school events we are planning special events, crafts day, field day, that parents can get involved in. If you could help out with a craft or activity during the last week of school, please send us a note.
Also at the parent group meeting, our Shelburne CVU school board representative, Jeff Parker, came to tell us more about the upcoming CVU building plan and the bond vote. To see details of the plan goto: www.cvuhs.org/bond Believe it or not, the time when our current Adventurers will be getting ready to go to high school is not all that far off. If you are planning to vote, but might have trouble getting to the town hall on that day, we encourage you to make a quick phone call to the town clerk to have them send you your absentee ballot (985-5116). We also encourage you to suggest this option to your Shelburne neighbors (or friends in Williston, Charlotte, or Hinesburg). Voter turnout is usually low for these special bond items, so every vote is extremely important.
This week we learned two Japanese Hiku poems. One is about the Moon and the other about a Frog. Many students learned the poems in Japanese and we encourage you to request a recital. The challenge this week was to write down ideas for special activities for the last week of school. And the art activity was to make a sculpture from the “Magic Noodles” that Debra brought in. We wanted to send these home, but they’re rather fragile, so please have your child bring in a shoe box or something to transport their creation in.
In math groups this week, first and second graders worked on measurement of distance, triangles, addition facts, and multiplication. Kindergarteners have been working on number stories.
This week’s estimating jar was filled with tiny shampoo bottles. Ask your child how many there were and whose estimate was the closest.
In Music this week “Kindergarten Detectives” have completed their dictation notebooks, which were sent home. Please have your daughter/son tell you about their music "codes" and teach you the rhythm patterns! First and second graders completed their music composition unit, and their songs are outstanding! We ended the unit with students performing their pieces for their class. We are very proud of the effort and concentration demonstrated by each student, to do their best work. Please have your daughter/son discuss the process from rhythm pattern, to completed song.
Adventurers came up with many excellent questions about the life cycle of a frog for this week’s parentlink activity. Next Wednesday is last ELF program for this year, so the ParenteLink homework activity for this weekend is to make a thankyou card for our ELF volunteers. Please have your child think about a favorite activity or topic from the many wonderful programs this year to include as a note or a drawing in the card.
All SCS library books are due on May 30th. Also please check around your house for any Adventurers Accelerated Reader books, as we’ll be doing our year-end inventory soon. There was no book swap this year, and in past years this has helped us fill in the gaps in the classroom collection. If you have books that your family is finished with and might be on the Accelerated Reader list, we would be greatly appreciate having them.
On the last Scholastic Book order someone ordered and paid for the “Scooby-Doo and You” Mystery Club but for some reason they do not have the name and address. Please let us know if you ordered this item.
