Adventurers ParentLink: May 9th, 2003

First of all, tonight is set-up for the yardsale on Saturday. Please bring your things to the SCS gym between 7:30-8:30. The shifts on the schedule are pretty well filled so that no one will have to work more than one shift, but we could still use some help with making the milkshakes/smoothies and to pack-up between 1:30-3:00.  We encourage Adventurers students to work with you at the tables during your shift. Check the schedule for the slot you volunteered for at http://scsvt.org/TEAMS/Advent/YardSaleJobs.htm See you tomorrow.

This week on Monday morning we went to a school assembly of a theatrical event on the theme of water use called “Alice in Waterland.”  Students learned about the water cycle, how to conserve water, and take care of this precious resource.

Our visit to the Green Mountain Audubon center on Wednesday was full of interesting activities. Students divided into four groups; Frogs, Salamanders, Snakes, and Turtles.  Each group did investigations at the Peeper Pond, the Beaver pond, at the Hemlock Swamp and at a vernal pool and then took a hike up to Lookout Rock. We saw many different species and other signs of springs, and three of the groups saw the beavers at work. We hope your child has had a chance to tell fill you in on the details.

On Friday we had a visit from an Abenaki grandmother as a follow to our visit to the Ethan Allen Homestead.  Please ask your child to tell you all about her.

Maki taught us all how to make an orgami flower. Each student made a flower and attached it to a mother’s day card that was brought home for this weekend.

Students also were busy this week decorating the donations boxes for the UNICEF “School-in-a-box” project to raise money to supply schools in Iraq. Did you see the photo of Adventurers with their box in the Shelburne News? Also, there is an Adventurers review of “African Tales” in this week’s issue.

This week Aiman filled the estimating jar with paper balls. Since we’re sending out ParentLink on Friday morning, you’ll have to ask your child to find out how many there were and whose estimate was the closest.

Next week is School-Spirit-Week. Each day of the week has a special theme. Monday “School colors” Tuesday- “Wacky Hair and makeup”, Wednesday “Twin Day”, Thursday “Clash Day” and Friday “Pajama Day.

This coming Monday evening is our final Adventurers parent group potluck and meeting. We'll be making plans for the trip to the Biodome and botanical garden in Montreal and our last week of school events when we usually schedule special events, crafts day, field day, that parents can get involved in.We will also have a representative to tell us more about the upcoming CVU  building plan and the bond vote.

Next week we will have our final ELF program for the year. The theme is frogs. The parentlink homework activity for this weekend is for you child to tell you something they have already learned about the life cycle of a frog and a question that s/he would like answered.

If you are interested joining us for the BioDome trip on June 5th, please send us a note.

Reminders:

1)      Tell your child about the ParentLink activity and make sure they bring it to school.
