Adventurers Team

This week we learned more about the life and work of Martin Luther King. Each day a group Adventurers shared some of what they learned with the entire school over the morning announcements. We also shared Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday Martin" and this passage from his famous "I have a Dream" speech. They did an excellent job and many people commented and appreciated what they shared. On Wednesday we had some special activities to celebrate and honor MLK. We talked about the importance of having positive visions for the future and the MLK's strength and courage came from his hope and faith in the future. In cooperative groups, students chose a vision for the future that would make the world a better place for everyone. Please ask your child what his/her group chose and how they represented this with words and pictures.

This week first and second graders shared their retelling of their favorite fables and fairy tales.

In math this week the kindergartners worked on reading two-digit numbers and also measurement with a ruler in inches and centimeters. First and second graders worked on probability, place value, multiplication, and problem solving.

The art activity was to make a portrait of MLK. And many students learned a passage from MLK's "I Have a Dream." Ask your child to recite it for you.

Taylor filled our estimating jar with animal crackers. It turned out there were over 1000 and Brooke came the closest with her estimate so she will fill the jar for next week. And the total "Reading Record" minutes this week was 4430.

The challenge this week was a geometric challenge called "The Perfect Square." Some found it very easy and others struggled. Be sure to ask your child about it.

In art this week the kindergartners worked on snow angels and we also talked a little about the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael. We are working on these projects for the arts Kindergarten Morning on February 19th.

In Art this week the first and second graders listened to the story of Snowflake Bentley and have created snow collages including snow people. They created snow people out of muslin sacks that the Alpha team made for us. They will be stuffing them and then give their snow person some character.

In P.E. the kindergarteners have been learning about balance and body parts. We have also just started a dance unit where they have been putting spatial awareness, directions and pathways together.

And in Music kindergarten students are preparing for their February 19th concert. (9AM) We are learning songs about friendship, snow, and Valentine's Day. We are also learning folk dances, and will perform them on the 19th.

First and second graders are dancing up a storm! Working together, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Burritt are teaching folk dances from around the world. We're even learning the Alley Cat! We will be planning a culminating event, and will keep you posted.

We're hoping to start literature groups very soon, but we need a couple more volunteers (especially to do a kindergartner group in the morning).

On Monday the Adventurers Parent Group met to plan for February Family Fun Night, Spring Math Night, our day at Catamount family Center and other upcoming excursions, including Green Mountain Audubon Center, and several trips related to our studies of Native Americans and Geography, and our end of the year trip this year to The Montreal BioDome. Please mark the dates below on your calendar. If you weren't able to make it to the meeting we could really use some volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up at the fun night.
