Welcome to Adventurers’ Parentlink message for Friday, May 24th.

This week . . .

On Monday we welcomed Pam’s return. It was great that all our kindergartners were able to stay for the afternoon and they had lots to tell her about everything they have been doing during her absence.            Pam will be here afternoons for the duration of the school year and Megan will continue in the mornings.

This week our focus was on vegetables. On Tuesday we sampled the many fresh vegetables that students brought in, including Cauliflower, cucumber, radish, Kale, carrots, and green peppers. We were so impressed with how the students were willing to try all the vegetables and somewhat surprised at how much they enjoyed some of the more unusual vegetables. On Wednesday morning we made stone soup, as promised, and each student added their vegetable to the pot. As the smell filled the room our appetites grew and when it was ready to serve at our morning break, everyone was excited to try it and many came back for seconds and thirds.  We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that our morning snack is really meant to provide a nutritional boost in the morning. Students will enjoy a healthy snack and we suggest that you save the cookies, puddings, Jello, chocolate covered treats, and other sugar snacks for an after-school desert if you feel it’s appropriate.

The poem this week was called “A Carrot Poem” and it helped us remember about the “5-a-day” rule; that we should eat at lease five servings of a fruits and vegetables each day.

We’re still waiting for the baby praying Mantises to emerge from their eggsac.

Friday was our hike to snake mountain.  This was a more ambitious hike than our Mt. Philo hike in the fall.

Thanks to those parents who joined us: Doris and Jeff Ogden, Jeff Shedd, Dawn Hameline, Mannie Hilker,

If you’re interested in learning more about Snake Mountain, here’s a link that provides a great description of the hike along with interesting facts about the mountain’s geology and history:http://w00.middlebury.edu/EL365A/Snake%20Mountain.html

In math this week, the kindergartners have been learning about three dimensional shapes; spheres, cylinders, pyramids, and prisms. We also spent some time examining dollar bills, and learning about many of the symbols that are used on currency.

First graders began a new unit using mental arithmetic and fractions.

This week the second graders.

Next week all books must be returned by Friday, May 31st.  Also we seem to be missing some of our Accelerated Reader books from our classroom collection, please check around your home.

The book swap in on Wednesday, if you have any used childrens’ books to exchange, please make sure your child brings them in on Tuesday, so they can get tickets to take to the swap on Wednesday.

Next Thursday is our day at Shelburne Farms. We’ll be learning about soil erosion and the water cycle.  We always look forward to our visits to the farms. We welcome some additional chaperones, if you would like to join us for the day, please send a reply. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to outside for part of the day and brings a lunch.  The staff at Shelburne Farms asks us to remind you to help reduce garbage flow by requesting that students bring their lunch in recyclable and reusable containers.

We’ll need some volunteers to help with the picnic on June 11th and also if you have a large grill that you would be willing to lend, we would love to hear from you.
