Where and how big is SCS?

SCS is a public PreK-8 school in Shelburne, Vermont.  As part of the Chittenden South Supervisory Union (CSSU), SCS has over 800  students and approximately 150 adults working day-in and day-out during the school year.  Located in Chittenden County, 7 miles south of Burlington, the Town of Shelburne sits on the shores of Lake Champlain and in the shadows of the Green and Adirondack Mountains (see "How to contact SCS?" below for a geographic location of SCS).   To see a collage of pictures from outside the school building, click HERE.

Shelburne is considered a bedroom suburban community with some local businesses and farms.  For an overview of Shelburne's population, cost per student, average income, average tax rate and more, visit the MSN House and Home Neighborhood Details site.  SCS is a Vermont Business Roundtable Medallion Quality School Award recipient (2002-2005 for the Middle School and 2005 for the Elementary School award) based on the schools commitment to planning and academic achievement.  Scroll down to "What other institutions say about SCS" for even more information).  Most students who graduate from the 8th grade attend the local public high school, Champlain Valley Union (CVU).

Direction of education

Our school has both a Mission and a Vision Statement as adopted by the SCS Board of Directors.  You can learn more about the Board of Directors by viewing previous minutes and agendas.  The Board of Directors meets monthly on the second Wednesday of the month starting at 7:00 p.m at Champlain Valley High School, in Hinesburg  Education is an ongoing process that includes local, supervisory union, and state level work related to standards and curriculum.  To see how SCS has faired with student assessment scores and the Vermont School Report (demographic information) compiled by the Vermont Department of Education and the University of Vermont, visit our Tests Given to Students section.  A Student Handbook is given to all families in addition to a variety of policies and related documents.

Structure of the school

Students work as a team of learners with educators for three year relationships.  These teams are organized by grade levels K-1-2, 3-4-5 and 6-7-8.  Teams provide information about their philosophies, organization, thoughts on student/teacher roles, and assessment.  Click on a grade level above then a team name to learn more, you can also learn about the foreign language, art, music, and physical education departments there too.  You can also visit each team or department via a map of the school.

Work done at school

SCS is proud of the work done by our students, teachers and staff.   Research is strengthened by our Library/Media Specialists, the G. Alfred Mercaldo Library and a Cool Tools online section.  The school employs Math and Literacy (Language Arts) coordinators to strengthen the work done by the SCS faculty.  Science and Social Studies are enriched through a variety of community resources such as the Shelburne Museum, the University of Vermont, and ECHO (the Lake Champlain Aquarium and Science Center) and the parent volunteer "Hands On Nature" science program to name a few.  Information technology is an important aspect of the daily life at SCS.  Accessing, creating, and using information is the focus of technology use at our school.  Many resources have been collected and shared via the CyberTrips page.

Communications

Sporting news, lunch menus, and a school calendar are regularly updated for students and parents.  Each month school related news is published including the School Newsletter and PTO happenings.  Articles are published weekly through the Shelburne News.

Family support

Parental and family support are central to a child's learning.  SCS has strong guidance and special education departments along with community and health services.  Discipline is based on a school-wide behavioral code.  Workshops and informational meetings sponsored by the PTO are routinely conducted during the school year addressing both education and parenting issues.
