A Few Notes on Testing

Although test scores are only one measure of student achievement, they have become increasingly important in assessing student learning.   Since October, 2005, Vermont has used the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) for grades 3-8 to measure how well students are learning specific skills defined by the state in English/language arts and mathematics. As of May, 2006, the Vermont Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) has been used to evaluate early reading performance in grade 2.  In the spring of 2007 science will also be part of the NECAPs.  During February the NAEP test will be given to 4th and 8th grade students for mathematics, reading and writing.
Test scores can be an indicator of what's happening in the classroom, they don't tell you everything about the quality of a particular school. Always look at more than one measure when judging school performance and visit in person before making any final assessment.
The No Child Left Behind law requires all states to have a state testing program. Schools must also demonstrate evidence of "adequately yearly progress" toward meeting state learning standards for all groups of students. Schools that do not comply risk losing federal Title I funding. Children in failing schools have the right to transfer to a better-performing school in the district and obtain supplemental services, such as remedial classes and tutoring.

Administration Updates To Parents Related to Testing

                                                                                                           December, 2006

Dear Parents,

NECAPs ... In October, SCS grade 3 through 8 took state exams in Language Arts and Mathematics, with 4th and 8th graders also taking tests in writing ...we anticipate that we will receive the results in Janurary. Individual letters and student scores will be sent to parents shortly after teachers receive them.  We also anticipate a Science NECAP to be administered in May...more details will be published as we receive news from the Vt Department of Education.

In February, the 4th and 8th graders will take part in the NAEP, the National Assessment of Education Progress ... this is the national exam that is administered to samples of students throughout the United States on a semi annual basis. Results are only calculated for each state, so no student or school receives individual results. The exam is administered to each grade and parents will be notified by mail as to dates. The exam is about 11/2 hours in length.

In February the 8th graders will be surveyed with the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) which is a confidential survey of our 8th graders. It is conducted throughout the state and school, district and state results are reported back to schools and school boards. These results are used for planning programs at the district level.

Fifth and seventh graders will take part in the SWISHER survey, which is also semi annually and is similar to the YRBS, in content, reporting data, and program usage. Look for more information on these surveys next month through individual letters home to parents.

Please call one of us in the Guidance Office or your child's principal should you have questions.
