LISTENING 1.13 CLARIFICATION AND RESTATEMENT:

Grades K-2, (5-8 year-olds)

Grades 3-5, (8-11 year-olds)

Grades 6-8, (11-14 year-olds)

Students listen and respond. This is evident when students:

· Respond by drawing, writing, discussing, and making diagrams.

· Follow simple oral directions. · Ask clarifying questions.

· Know difference between comments and questions and when to use them.

· Listen and respect the ideas of others.

· Explore and evaluate the ideas of others and formulate opinions.

· Confirm and self-correct predictions about literature read orally. Stay on the topic.

· Follow multi-step directions.

· Analyze information presented orally and ask clarifying questions.

· Distinguish between making a comment and asking a question and use appropriately.

· Paraphrase others’ viewpoints and formulate opinions.

· Evaluate predictions and confirm or reject predictions citing specific information.

· Synthesize into note form the main idea of an oral presentation (e.g. a peer’s research report, a visiting speaker’s talk, a video presentation).

· Choose and use a listening strategy that best fits the purpose in a listening situation (e.g. eye contact, body language, proximity).

· Resist common barriers to effective listening. (e.g. daydreaming, private conversations).

· Evaluate oral messages for accuracy, effectiveness, significance and propriety.

· Confirm understanding by asking critical questions and/or paraphrasing.

· Respect and tolerate while not necessarily agreeing with the ideas, beliefs and opinions of others.

Students critique what they have heard. This is evident when students:

· Critique what they have heard by relating personal experiences that are relevant.

· Respond to others’ presentations by giving constructive oral feedback.

· Critique what they have heard based on personal experiences and information learned.

· Listen to different presentations and begin to interpret the accuracy of information and form opinions.

· Extend what they have heard to connect new knowledge with prior knowledge and offer alternative ideas.

· Respond to others’ presentations by giving constructive oral and written feedback.

· Critique complex material based on personal experiences and information learned.

· Listen to different presentations and critique the accuracy and internal coherence of each presentation.

· Respond to others’ presentations by giving feedback to elicit the best the speaker has to offer.
