7. Fields of Knowledge - Science, Math, and Technology
Mathematical Problem Solving and Reasoning
| MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM SOLVING AND REASONING 7.10 APPLICATIONS: | Grades K-2, (5-8 year-olds) | Grades 3-5, (8-11 year-olds) | Grades 6-8, (11-14 year-olds) |
| Students use concrete, formal, and informal strategies
to solve mathematical problems, apply the process of mathematical modeling,
and extend and generalize mathematical concepts. Students apply mathematics
as they solve scientific and technological problems or work with technological
systems. This is evident when students:
7.10 Applications |
· Determine the purpose of a questions, assignment
or problem with teacher assistance.
· Create and use a variety of strategies and approaches to solve problems. · Disucss approaches that other people use. · Make generalizations from particular problems. · Make estimates. |
· Determine the purpose of a question, assignment
or problem.
· Solve problems by reasoning mathematically with concepts and skills expected at each level. · Create, use a variety of approaches and evaluate the approaches that others use. · Explore how to breakdown a complex problem into simpler parts. · Extract pertinent information from situations with assistance. · Make connections between concepts in order to solve problems. · Extend concepts and generalize to other situations. · Explain solutions through oral, visual and written forms. |
· Determine what the questions, assignment, or
problem is really asking them to do.
· Formulate and solve a variety of meaningful problems. · Create and use a variety of approaches and understand and evaluate the approaches that others use. · Determine how to breakdown a complex problem into simpler parts. · Extract pertinent information from situations. · Integrate concepts and techniques from different areas of mathematics. · Generalize solutions and strategies to new problem situations. · Formulate conjectures and argue (short of formal proof) why they must be or seem to be true. |
