THE LIVING WORLD 7.13 ORGANISMS, EVOLUTION, AND INTERDEPENDENCE:

Grades K-2, (5-8 year-olds)

Grades 3-5, (8-11 year-olds)

Grades 6-8, (11-14 year-olds)

Students understand the characteristics or organisms, see patterns of similarity and differences among living organisms, understand the role of evolution, and recognize the interdependence of all systems that support life. This is evident when students:

7.13 Organisms, Evolution, and Interdependence

· Categorize living organisms, (e.g. plants, fruits, vegetables).

· Understand that plants and animals have features that help them live in different environments.

· Describe and show examples of systems that support life and how those systems work together (e.g. the family, community, food chains, life cycles).

· Identify characteristics of organisms and demonstrate that a variety of living organisms can be sorted into groups in many ways using various features to decide which things belong to which groups, and that features used for grouping depend on the purpose of the grouping.

· Demonstrate understanding of change over time, such as evolution and fossil evidence depicting the great diversity of organisms developed over geologic history.

· Demonstrate understanding of life cycles of organisms, such as how inheritance and environment determine the characteristics of an organism; and that all plants and animals have life cycles.

· Recognize the existence of limiting factors such as space, water, temperature, food, sunlight, disease and age.

· Describe, model, and explain the principles of the interdependence of systems that support life and apply them to the understanding of local, regional, and global systems.

· Identify and use internal and external of anatomical structures to classify organisms.

· Describe evolution, diversity, and adaptation of organisms, such as common ancestry, speciation, adaptation, variation, and extinction.

· Describe, model, and explain the principles of the interdependence of all systems that support life (e.g. food chains, webs, life cycles, energy levels, populations, oxygen-carbon dioxide cycles), and apply them to local, regional, and global systems.

· Identify, model, and explain the structure and function (e.g. cells, tissues, organs, organ systems) of organisms (e.g. plants, animals, microbes), both as individual entities and as components of ecosystems of plants and animals.

· Demonstrate understanding of reproduction and heredity, such as sexual and asexual reproduction; and the role of genes and environment on trait expression.

7.14 THE HUMAN BODY:

Grades 6-8, (11-14 year-olds)

Students demonstrate understanding of the human body - heredity, body systems, and individual development and understand the impact of the environment of the human body. This is evident when students:

7.14 The Human Body

· Identify the parts of the human body and demonstrate how they work together.

· Identify and describe environmental factors that can influence human health.

· Recognize that there are many similarities between parents and their children, (e.g. some inherited, some learned).

· Identify the systems of the human body, and demonstrate understanding of how they work together. (e.g. circulatory, respiratory, etc.).

· Relate understanding of science to their personal health. (e.g food needed for activity, growth, varied diet to keep healthy, etc.)

· Identify the patterns of human development. (e.g. loosing teeth, growing taller, early adolescence).

· Demonstrate an understanding of the human body systems for obtaining and providing energy, defense, reproduction, hormones, immunity, and coordination of physical functions.

· Provide examples of how the health of human beings is affected by their genetic makeup and environmental factors (e.g. exposure to microbes, pollution, ozone depletion).

· Describe how genetic information is passed through reproduction (e.g. genes contained in chromosomes, traits as expressions of genes).

· Identify and explain the human body’s pattern of development. (especially with emphasis on adolescence).
