| Students understand how natural resources are extracted,
distributed, processed, and disposed of. This is evident when students:
7.16 Natural Resources |
· Identify appropriate materials for
particular construction based on such factors as availability of materials,
environmental costs, need, etc.
· Understand that some resources are finite and others are renewable. · Understand that some materials are found naturally and others have to be manufactured. · Show that some materials can be reused and recycled, while others will be disposed of in landfills. |
· Select and use materials based on
their properties, and on how they interact with other materials.
· Identify the steps that need to be followed when extracting natural resources. · Demonstrate the ways that some materials can be reused, while others will be disposed in landfills. · Identify how and why natural resources are unevenly distributed throughout the world, and how they are distributed through transportation. |
· Critically evaluate steps taken in extracting
natural resources.
· Compare and evaluate product made of either natural or synthetic materials in terms of physical, visual impact, or environmental cost, appropriateness for user. |

| Students apply knowledge and understanding of technological
systems to respond to a variety of issues. This is evident when students:
7.17 Technological Systems |
· Understand that technological systems (e.g. transportation, communications, nutrition, sanitation, health care, entertainment and other technologies) give large numbers of people today the goods and services that once were luxuries enjoyed only by the wealthy. | · Describe the processes involved within
each technological system (e.g. construction, power and transportation,
communication, and manufacturing).
· Recognize the basic inputs of all technological systems. · Identify the outputs for each technological system. · Evaluate technological outputs, and recognize the changes necessary to improve the system. · Understand that any invention is likely to lead to other inventions. · Understand that technology both shapes society and is shaped by it. |
· Apply the basic processes involved within each
technological system (e.g. construction, power and transportation, communication,
and manufacturing).
· Use the basic inputs of all technological systems. · Evaluate technological outputs, and demonstrate the changes to improve the system. |

impacts of our expanding technological activities in the areas of communication,
construction, manufacturing power and transportation, energy sources, health
technology, and bio technology. This is evident when students:
7.18 Outputs and Impacts |
· Understand that people are always
inventing new tools to solve problems and get work done.
· Understand that when a group of people wants to build something new, they should try to figure out ahead of time how it might affect other people. · Understand that technology is a human endeavor. · Use tools to extend their capabilities. · Use tools and machines in a safe manner. |
· Explain how people invent new tools
to solve problems and get work done.
· Explain how it is possible for new technologies to affect some people and groups adversely. · Recognize limitations on supplies of natural resources and alternatives to scarce resources. |
· Demonstrate how people create and use tools
to observe, measure, create, and control.
· Demonstrate an understanding that people are able to share, compile, use, and misuse technology. · Identify the positive and negative consequences of technology (e.g. nuclear power for generating electricity). |

| Students use technological/engineering processes to design solutions to problems. This is evident when students: | · Recognize that there are several
steps in planning solutions to technological problems and in making things.
· Create a design solution. · Build on specifications, with an understanding of the constraints (e.g. cost, weight, environment), and tolerances that affect performance. · Include mathematical and/or mechanical models of their design. · Include steps and sequences for efficiently building a prototype that conforms to the specifications. · Test the prototype. · Use the results to modify the design. |
· Understand that the sequence in which the steps
of the design solution occur is critical to the efficiency and effectiveness
of a solution.
· Create, test, and modify design solutions for more complex problems. |
