Students demonstrate understanding of the ways in which the English language evolves and changes. This is evident when students:

Students demonstrate an understanding of the structures of the English language. This is evident when students:

· Recognize and use 7 parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb, pronoun, adverb, conjunction, preposition).

· Identify simple subjects and predicates in sentences.

· Write a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

· Write informative, persuasive, narrative, and expository paragraphs.

· Use mechanics correctly: capital letters, ending punctuation, commas, quotes, apostrophes.

· Use a variety of sentence structures (compound, complex).

· Use paragraphs to organize material.

· Use correct mechanics: capital letters, ending internal punctuation (i.e. colon, semi-colon, quotes, apostrophes).

· Use correct spelling.

· Write using past, present and future tenses.

· Self edit for correctness.

· Recognize common errors.
