Draft July 1997

SHELBURNE COMMUNITY SCHOOL AREAS OF STUDY IN SCIENCE SOCIAL STUDIES - otherwise known as "The Green Sheet"

During the 1994-95 school year, faculty representing all levels met for an entire day for, the specific purpose of defining the important topics in Science and Social Studies that all students were to study during their K-8 experience at the Shelburne Community School. The topics of study were determined using a document entitled The Vermont Common Core as a reference.

Since its inception the SCS document has been referred to as SHELBURNE COMMUNITY SCHOOL AREAS OF STUDY IN SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES. At each level there, is a specific list of areas (or topics) of study that are to be covered at some point in time with n the three years that a student is on a team. The areas of study may be taught as separate units or integrated into broader studies. Either way, the intent is that there are areas of study in Science and Social Studies that are COMMON to ALL students as they advance through SCS regardless of what team they are on.

In the August 1997 draft of the Shelburne Community School Curriculum, The Areas of Study in Science and Social Studies are included in the section of the document entitled FIELDS OF KNOWLEDGE. In a column on the left side of the page are the words, “Areas of Study for All Shelburne Students." Whenever an area of study has a relationship to one of the standards it is listed there. This allows the reader and user of this curriculum to see all of the possible connections between the standards contained within the Fields of Knowledge and the Areas of Study in Science and Social Studies that are now imbedded in the August 1997 draft of the SCS Curriculum Document.
