Welcome to Reading Power

Back to Library Home Page

Reading Power is a program used by some teams at SCS with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. At its center is the reading and discussion of literature in a small group setting. Most teachers put a Reading Power program in place for several weeks. Programs usually run during the second half of the school year, but some teachers choose to start in the late fall. Most Reading Power leaders are parent volunteers. They can also be SCS paraprofessionals, student teachers, or classroom teachers. Reading Power volunteers commit to meeting with their discussion group on a weekly or biweekly basis, choosing appropriate books for their group, preparing for the discussion, and providing the classroom teacher with feedback on the functioning of the group.

The following sections explain how Reading Power complements the Vermont State Frameworks, gives information on how the program functions, and provides tips to discussion leaders. If you do not find the information you need for conducting a Reading Power group, place contact the SCS librarians or email Ellen Matthews.
