Appendix 2d - Preplanning Input from Ninth & Tenth Grade Students


Student participants: A Group of four local high school students

The Question: What should the SCS stop, start, or continue doing to prepare students for CVU who will become contributing members of society, skillful workers, and effective family members in the 21st Century?

Note: a number following an idea indicates the number of times that idea was mentioned in the brainstorm. * represent the level of priority.

Continue:

*Geographic memorization

Giving students lots of homework

Stop:

***Eliminate flexible deadlines

**The write-up policy

**Changing the school rapidly- confusing, can't settle in

**Babying the students

*Having curtains separate classrooms

Giving students important notices for parents (they never get to the parents)

Start:

*****Grading system 3

***Matching curriculum from grade school subjects to CVU subjects

**Approach learning in different ways so that all students can understand

*Giving people experiences with other school to get an idea for what their education is

*Alpha needs more science

*Providing water fountain access

*Keep toilet paper and paper towels stocked

*Math and writing need to be involved more at SCS

*Equally dividing the better teachers among the teams

*Preparing students for high school, more challenging, consistent work

*Give larger exam-like preparation 2

*Teach writing skills

*Disciplining right

Teaching the things that are needed at High School

Having better more efficient communication between parents and teachers

Students should be able to learn the way they learn best- having teachers, etc. accomodate for that

Start:

Individual grades, no mixed grades

More regular classes to prepare for CVU- History, English

Doing Math and Science

Scheduling School Board meeting so athletes can go to meetings

Each student should be able to choose their, although all should have same amount or challenging/equal work

Having more experience with different topics

**Have separate Art facilities

*The teaming

Multiage environment 2

Projects in groups such as Wagon train/trails that encourage teamwork

Dress code 2

Communication between the teachers and students/parents

Good band room

Tech-Ed, Living Arts, etc.

Calling by first or last names depends on teacher

No candy

Stop:

Problems within administration distract from overall group goals.

Ideas that are unclear of not well transferred from administration to classrooms

Not allowing certain foods (candy)

Having grades together in class

Bad teachers anywhere

Oriented toward specific

Allowing kids to make it through/graduate automatically

So much censorship-though some (dress code) is needed

Integrated Math and Science (separate classes for those are needed)

Start:

*****Providing students with more guidance about starting High School

*****Giving grades (A,B,C,etc.) 4

****More basic English skills

*Beginning labs and experiments using equipment

*Teachers on teams with varying skills

Having College and CVU kids come in to share thoughts and ideas with 7th and 8th graders

Offering more choice (curriculum, clubs) 2
