Appendix 2c - Preplanning Input from Eighth Grade Students
Student participants: Seven 8th grade students from SCS.

The Question: What should the Shelburne Community School start, stop, or continue doing to prepare students who will become contributing members of society, skillful workers, and effective family members?
Note: a number following an idea indicates the number of times that idea was mentioned in the brainstorm. * represents the level of priority.
Continue:
*Offering different options (Alpha, Middle School, etc.)
*Offering team choices 2
Different learning environments 2
Leadership programs
Band lessons
Giving extra work to kids who need it
Stop:
***Classes with students in different levels
** Six weeks of Gym and Drama
** Inconsistency in disciplinary procedures
*Dress code
Making the buses pick up kids behind the school
Changing programs in major ways every two years, you are yanking the students around
Start:
******Build an auditorium 4
****** Start a grading system 2
***** Make doors and walls in the school 2
*** Re-do scheduling for PE and Drama (not block schedule)
*** One standard grade for everyone in school
** More space for expanding community
Start:
** Community service again 3
** Advanced classes
** 1 or 2 more buses and drivers because we have long rides
** Offer extras in both directions
** More prep for high school
* Making cuts for school teams
* Giving more algebra classes so all students were prepared for high school, not just some 2
* Giving student council more authority
* Computer technology
* Start using Science Lab for Science
*Being harder on students- teachers give us too many chances to make up work
* Work on our athletic program to make it more organized
* Start mixing kids in different teams together 2
* Start Tech Ed.
* Offering Art as a class
New classes- Home-Ec, Tech ed. Science, Technology 4
E-mailing schools around the country or world
Rethink bus routes and get new bus
More buses so we get to sporting events on time
More training for bus drivers to deal with unruly kids
Adding on additions to school
More measures to insure school safety
Improve on Physical Education class
Talking about Martin Luther King Day
A pool for swim team
More facilities and room
Weight lifting
Video camera classes with other schools
Expanding to other communities
Making different consequences to different things, don't always send to planning room
Open up showers that we have but are being used to store paper 2
